Lady Choctaws Drop Contest at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team dropped a 73-57 decision at Union (Tenn.) University on Saturday, Jan. 23. The setback evens the Lady Choctaws record at 3-3 while Union improved to 8-2 on the season.
 
MC was led in scoring by Moriah Hurst with 13 points. NeNe Williams added 12 points while Kyiah Julian chimed in 10 points following her career-high night on Friday at Union. Alana Canday paced the Navy and Gold on the glass with a team-best and season-high eight rebounds.

MC shot 32.2 percent from the floor and was 14-for-17 (82.4) from the free throw line – the second-best clip from the charity stripe on the campaign. MC totaled 34 rebounds.
 
Jaelencia Williams led the Lady Bulldogs for the second straight night as she poured in a game-best 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Shanique Lucas added 17 points while Selale Kepenc added 11 points.
 
UU shot 42.9 percent from the field, including 6-of-15 from behind the arc, and posted a clip of 92.6 from the free throw line. The Red and White grabbed a total of 35 rebounds.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mississippi College jumped out early in the contest as it grabbed a nine-point advantage with 4:45 left to play in the opening quarter. The lead marked the largest of the game for the Lady Choctaws. Union chipped away at the deficit and tied the contest at 13-al with 1:16 to play in the quarter, but MC responded with the final four points to take a 17-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
- Union grabbed its first lead of the game early in the second quarter as Williams hit a pair of free throws with 8:11 in the quarter to lift UU up 19-17. The Lady Bulldogs' lead grew to as many as seven points in the period, but MC managed to chisel at the deficit as it cut the margin to 30-29 with 3:16 remaining before half on a Williams' 3-pointer. The Lady Bulldogs' closed out the quarter as it scored five of the final seven points to take a 35-31 lead at the break.
- Union held the advantage the entire third quarter, despite MC cutting the lead to as few as one point with 2:12 in the period, but the Red and White closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run to grab its first double-digit lead of the game at 57-47 heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
- MC cut the Lady Bulldogs' lead under double figures early in the fourth behind back-to-back layups from Williams, but grew no closer as Union regained its double-digit lead with under six minutes to play and never relinquished it.
 
KEY STATS
- For the fifth time this season the Lady Choctaws' bench outscored the opposition's bench. MC held a plus-six advantage today against the Lady Bulldogs.
- Today's free throw percentage ranks second this season behind the 83.3 clip posted in the season opener against UAH on Dec. 11.
- NeNe Williams has scored in double figures in four straight contests this season, including her career-high 15 points at Delta State on Dec. 19. Kyiah Julian has scored in double figures in three consecutive games.
- Julian tied a career-high with four rebounds in the contest as she matched her effort at Delta State on Dec. 19, 2020.
