ROME, Ga. --- The Mississippi College baseball team dropped a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 7 at Shorter University. The Hawks claimed the opener 10-5 and rallied down 2-0 to complete the series-clinching twinbill sweep with a 3-2 victory in the night cap. MC moved to 11-9 on the season and 6-3 in GSC play.
 
Three Choctaws recorded multiple hits in the opening game of the day as 
Markarius Lee, 
Chauncey Callier and 
Ken Scott each had a pair of hits. Scott and 
Brandon Broussard provided the only multi-RBI efforts of the day with two RBI each. MC managed just three hits in the second contest of the day with those coming from Callier, 
Grant Barber and 
Casey Page. Callier added the lone RBI of the outing.
 
Garrett Hollinghead and 
Luke Files took the losses on the mound. Hollinghead (1-1) tossed 5.2 frames in the opener as he allowed seven runs on nine hits along with six strikeouts. Files (2-3) pitched 4.1 with three runs on five hits, including four walks and five strikeouts.
 
The Choctaws return to the Peach State on Saturday, March 14 as it visits the University of West Georgia for a three-game, GSC series. First pitch of the Saturday twinbill is set for 1 p.m. The series finale is slated for Sunday, March 15 at Noon. Both times are central.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks jumped on the board early in the game as it plated five runs their first three trips to the plate. Luis Acevedo headlined the first three frames with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third.
- MC picked up its first run of the contest in the top of the second as Scott singled to left field to score Callier. Scott added his second RBI of the game in the top of the fourth with to a single that plated Barber. The Choctaws cut the deficit to two runs in the top of the fifth as Page scored on a Barber sacrifice fly to center.
- SU regained the three-run lead in the bottom of the fifth and Keleeq Branningan extended the margin with an RBI in the sixth and the eighth. Cory Mason delivered the final blow in the eighth with a two-RBI single.
- Broussard drove in a pair in the ninth to help clip the advantage, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks evened the weekend series.
 
ON THE MOUND
- 
Truitt Smith relieved Hollinghead and pitched 1.1 frames as he allowed three runs on two hits with a walk.
- 
Dustan Dille tossed the final frame as he notched a strikeout and allowed two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- MC held a 2-0 lead through four innings of play. The Choctaws plated their first run in the first inning as Barber scored on a bases loaded, fielder's choice. The Navy and Gold added their second run in the fourth as Callier scored on a wild pitch.
- Braningan for the second straight game evened the contest for the Hawks as he drove in a pair in the bottom of the fifth with a single to right center. Two batters later, Mason gave the Blue and White the lead as he drew a bases loaded walk to push the third and final run across the dish.
 
ON THE MOUND
- 
Tommy Taborda tossed an inning in relief as he allowed a walk, a strikeout and two hit batters.
- 
Zack Ingram concluded the game on the hill with two-thirds of an inning with a walk and strikeout.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
- It's the first time the Choctaws have lost a GSC series since the regular season finale against Delta State last season.
- The 10-5 setback to the Hawks snapped a six-game win streak in the series for the Navy and Gold and gave SU its first win in Rome since March 6, 2017.
