ROME, Ga. --- Sophomore
Baylee Freudenberg became the first Mississippi College softball player since 2014 to hit three home runs in a game in Saturday's 8-0 win over Shorter University at Alto Park.
The Lady Choctaws improved to 13-7 on the year with a 4-3 Gulf South Conference mark, while the Hawks fell to 2-12 with a 1-6 league record.
Â
GAME NOTES
 - Freudenberg became the first Lady Choctaw to hit three home runs in a single game since Brooke Smitherman against Texas-Dallas on March 7, 2014.
 - She is the first MC player to have a multi-home run game since
Annemarie Peavy against Christian Brothers last season (April 6).
 - The Lady Choctaws had four home runs in the game, making it the second time this season they have turned the trick (Miles, Feb. 26).
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
 - The Lady Choctaws wasted no time scoring the eventual game-winning run as senior
Carly Crawford hit her third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning.
 - The lead remained 2-0 until the 4th inning when Freudenberg ripped her first home run of the game to lead off the frame.
 - Getting in on the action, sophomore
Gracie Trahan and senior
Shayla McKissock each singled home runs to push the lead to 5-0.
 - Freudenberg then blasted her second long ball of the game in the 5th inning to extend the MC lead to 6-0.
 - After MC tacked on a run in the 6th, Freudenberg gave the game its final score with her third home run of the contest in the 7th inning.
Â
KEY STATS
 - If not for Freudenberg's big offensive day, sophomore
Hannah Creel would have stolen the show with her effort in the circle.
 - Creel (5-4) gave up just three hits and no walks with four strikeouts over 5.0 innings.
 -
Avery Sanders tossed the final 2.0 innings, retiring the final six Hawk hitters in order.
 - Seven different Lady Choctaws tallied hits, led by Freudenberg with three and Crawford with a pair.
 - Senior
Hayden Claypool also notched a pair of doubles tying her for a team-high with five on the season now.
 - Shellby Young (1-6) took the loss for the Hawks, giving up 11 hits and eight earned runs over the complete game effort.
 - Three different players had the three hits for Shorter in the contest.
Â
NEXT UP
 - The teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a doubleheader at 11:00 a.m. (Central) at Alto Park.
