Lady Choctaws Complete Season Sweep at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team picked a pair of 20-plus scoring efforts as it completed the season sweep of Union University on Saturday, Feb. 22 with a resounding 89-63 victory at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. MC improved to 12-13 on the season and 9-10 in the Gulf South Conference. UU dropped to 22-5 and 16-3 in the conference.

Moriah Hurst and Coco Hobson combined to score 50 of the Lady Choctaws points in the win. Hurst paced the squad with a career-high 26 points while Hobson also reset her career-best with 24 points on the afternoon. Mikeba Jones added 16 points while Lindsey Vaughn chimed in 12. Jones came up two rebounds shy of a double-double as she grabbed a roster-best eight boards.

MC tied a season-high as it shot 52.2 percent from the floor, including a clip of 39.1 from behind the arc. The Navy and Gold also connected on 83.3 percent from the free throw line - fourth highest this season.

Jada Smith led UU in scoring with 24 points while Jaelencia Williams added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs shot 44.6 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the 3-point line. The Red and White was just seven-of-eight from the free throw line for 87.5 percent.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After trailing 20-15 after the first 10 minutes of play, the Lady Choctaws outscored Union 30-8 in the second quarter to take a 45-28 lead in at the intermission. MC tied the contest at 22-all with 6:45 left to play before the half and proceeded to outscore the Red and White 23-4 the remainder of the period as it grabbed a 19-point lead with 30 seconds left before the half.
- MC expanded its lead to 20-plus points in the third quarter as Hobson knocked down a pair of free throws midway through the quarter. The Navy and Gold grabbed as much as a 23-point lead on three different occasions during the quarter. UU trimmed the deficit to 69-51 with 10 minutes left to play.
- The Lady Choctaws quickly expanded their advantage to 20-plus points on a pair of buckets from Hurst early in the fourth and never let the margin slip under 20 the remainder of the way.
 
KEY STATS
- The 89 points marked a season-high for the Lady Choctaws as it surpassed the 88 points scored against Belhaven University in the season opener.
The 30 points is the most scored by MC in any quarter this season while the Lady Bulldogs point production marked the fewest scored by an opponent in the second this season and the second fewest totaled in a quarter all season by the opposition. 
- Hurst and Hobson became the fifth and sixth Lady Choctaws to score 20-plus points in a game this season with her scoring effort. MC has a combined 13 contests this season where a player has scored 20-plus points.

 
NEXT UP
- Mississippi College closes out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 29 as it travels to Livingston, Ala., to face the University of West Alabama. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall.
