Let's Talk Choctaws with Meeby and Kienna (Week Eleven)

Hello and welcome back to Let's Talk Choctaws with Meeby and Kienna!Little, Cameron

This week we had the pleasure of sitting down with Cameron Little, a senior golfer from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Like most other sports, the golf team gets started bright and early with workouts beginning at 6:00 in the morning. After that, Cameron grabs breakfast and then heads to class. Then, he has practice again, which starts in the late afternoon and usually continues until sunset. The amount of time that they can practice usually fluctuates between the fall and spring seasons, since there's more daylight in the early fall. The team also enjoys hanging out outside of the golf range. "We will sometimes go over to Parker Brooks' house and hang out and watch some sports," Cameron said.

Off the course, Cameron is a marketing major. He's a people person who enjoys getting to meet with and talk to new people, so he predicts that he will do well in the business world. "I enjoy doing face-to-face stuff, personal selling and that kind of thing," he said. He also has an internship lined up this summer for a marketing analytics company that he's looking forward to, and he plans to take his next steps after he completes the internship.

Little, Cameron (1)The golf team is the only other team besides cross country that has been able to compete this semester. Although many parts of the game of golf are naturally socially distanced, Cameron told us that the team has had to adjust in several other ways, as well. "There's some courses that we can't touch the pin to take it out. They also don't want anyone touching the rake." Additionally, one small difference is that instead of giving their opponents a handshake after the match, they now just give each other fist bumps.

A big part of what brought Cameron to Mississippi College was the golf team. Cameron was impressed with the coach, and felt like he immediately fit in with the players. He also thought MC was a great school. "I love the campus and everything about it," he said. One of Cameron's favorite things about being on the golf team is spending time with his teammates and being able to meet new people. "The competition between us is great," Cameron said, and he told us that he enjoys how the inter-team rivalry helps to push them to be their best.

Cameron got an early start in golf- "I come from a golf family," he said. "I wasn't pushed into it, but when I was three years old, my dad gave me a club and I started having fun with it," he said. He recalled that sometimes when his parents would be at work, he would be dropped off at the golf course and spend parts of his day there. "That's how I really started enjoying it," he said.

From the outsider's perspective, the game of golf seems very straightforward. However, Cameron told us a few stories about how the team mixes things up during practice. One of the games they play is called Quarters, and in the game, each person who's playing gets a quarter. Before they tee off, each person flips their quarter, and they divide into teams based on if they got heads or tails. They do this for all eighteen holes, so each time it's a different grouping. "It helps us stay competitive and keeps some of the rivalry going within the group," Cameron explained.Little, Cameron (2)

Many athletes have a pre-game routine, or a certain superstition that they practice before each game. For Cameron, it's something simple, but not so simple that he doesn't still get teased by his teammates. "Every time I play golf, I wear arm sleeves. I've been playing with them so long, I kind of go crazy if I don't have it. That's my signature," Cameron said, "I've been trying to stop though, because my teammates have been making fun of me," he laughed.

We enjoyed talking to Cameron and getting to know his outgoing personality. We wish him all the best in his final year, and we were glad that he was able to help represent Mississippi College this year.

Be sure to check back next Monday for our final guest!
