CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team snapped a two-game slide on Saturday, Jan. 4 as it topped Shorter University, 78-70, inside A.E. Wood Coliseum. MC improved to 6-6 on the season and 3-3 in Gulf South Conference play. SU fell to 0-10 and 0-5 in the league.

Three Lady Choctaws scored in double figures led by
Zariah Matthews with 21 points.
Coco Hobson notched her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
Shanell Kitchens added 17 points while
Mikeba Jones joined Hobson in double figures on the glass with a career-high 10.

MC shot 40 percent from the floor, including 5-for-15 from behind the arc, and connected on 81 percent from the free throw line.

Jasmine Gaines led the Lady Hawks with 21 points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. SU shot 34.4 percent from the field and was 25 of 29 from the charity stripe. The Blue and White shot just 18.8 percent from the 3-point line.

HOW IT HAPPENED
>> MC held an 18-9 lead through the first 10 minutes of play, but saw Shorter tie the contest at 25-all with 3:41 left before the half.
>> Hobson placed the Navy and Gold back in front on a jumper with 3:25 left in the second. MC closed out the first half on a 9-2 run.
>> SU took its first lead of the game at the 5:01 mark of the third quarter on a Fuller 3-pointer. She followed with a free throw to grab a 43-39 lead.
>> MC regained the lead at the 3:00 minute mark of the quarter on a Hobson layup and stretch its lead to 55-45 with 10 minutes to play in the contest.
>> The Lady Hawks cut the deficit to 68-66 with 2:49 to play, but MC closed out the game on a 10-4 run to capture its second straight win in the series and fourth overall.

>> It's the second 20-point scoring effort for Matthews this season as she scored a career-high 22 points on Thursday evening against West Georgia.
