Lady Choctaws Tripped Up by CBU

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team placed four players in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Choctaws (7-8, 4-5 Gulf South Conference) fell 78-71 to Christian Brothers University on Thursday, Jan. 16. CBU improved to 6-10 on the season and 3-6 in the conference
 
Shanell Kitchens paced the Navy and Gold with 18 points. The Ridgeland, Miss., native was 6-of-13, including 5-for-10 from behind the arc, in the contest. Moriah Hurst, Zariah Matthews and Coco Hobson recorded 14 points each in the setback. Hurst and Matthews led the team with six rebounds apiece.
 
MC shot 41.9 percent from the floor, including 42.9 from behind the arc, but managed just 62.5 percent from the free throw line.
 
CBU was led by Brynne Lytle with 27 points while Lauren Taylor posted 20. Lytle also led the squad with seven rebounds. The Lady Bucs shot 50 percent from the field, including 47.1 from the 3-point line. The Red and Black connected on 18-of-21 from the charity stripe for 85.7 percent.

HOW IT HAPPENED
>> The two teams battled to a 34-all deadlock at the break. MC led after the first period 18-16, before the Lady Bucs flipped the scoring in the second quarter to head into the intermission.
>> CBU opened the third quarter on a 6-0 and claimed a double-digit lead, 53-43, with 2:21 left in the period on a 3-pointer from Mackenzie Lane. MC managed to cut the deficit to single digits on a jumper from Kaitlyn Thompson.
>> Sydney Wilson pushed the lead back out to double figures with a pair of free throws at the 8:05 mark. MC cut the deficit to within three points with just over three minutes to play, but the Red and Black closed out the contest on a 10-6 run.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
>> Matthews matched a career-high with nine assists in the game.
>> It's the third time this season the Lady Choctaws have scored 70-plus points in a game and lost.
>> The outcome snapped a three-game win streak in the series for the Lady Choctaws.
>> CBU outscored the Lady Choctaws 22-12 in fast break points, while its bench held the edge in scoring at 19-7.
