Volleyball Tops Tigers in GSC Opener

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team snapped an 11-game skid to the University of West Alabama with a straight sets sweep of the Tigers to open Gulf South Conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The win marked the first over the Tigers since 2002 and the first sweep since 1994.
 
Kendall Platt led the Choctaws with 12 kills in the match – her third straight match in double figures and eighth of the season. Lexie Laurendine and Ingrid Savola each totaled double figure assists as Laurendine dished out a team-best 18 and Savola added 13.
 
Defensively, three Choctaws totaled 10-plus digs on the night led by Brandi Bundy with 13. Julia Martin added 12 while Platt chimed in 11. Autumn Frost led the way on the front line with three total blocks while Laurendine and Hannah Rue each supplied two.

TURNING POINT
After a tight contest in the opening set and a Mississippi College 25-20 win the second set, the Choctaws kept momentum in the early-goings of the third set as they ran out a 7-3 lead, including a 4-0 run to start the set. Rue and Frost delivered kills and Laurendine followed with an ace along with a UWA miscue to grab the early lead. MC never trailed in the set en route to the 25-20, match-clinching victory.  
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • The win marked the fifth in the series for the Choctaws.
  • With the 12 digs, Martin moved into a tie with Sydney Chandler for seventh.
  • Martin reset her career-high with five service aces in the contest. She surpassed her previous total four set over the weekend against Spring Hill. She moved into seventh in aces with the performance tonight.
  • Platt turned in her 11th match of her career with a double-double.
  • Frost tied a season-high with her three rejections in the match.
