CLINTON, Miss. --- The #46 nationally ranked Mississippi College Women's Tennis team is set to appear in the 2019 Gulf South Conference Tennis Championship this Thursday May 2 against the University of Alabama-Huntsville at 9:00 A.M. in Montgomery, Ala at Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Center.
The Lady Choctaws will enter the first round of the tournament as the #3 seed and will be matched up with the #6 seed UAH Chargers. MC will bring into the tournament an overall record of 15-5 and a 9-2 record in the GSC with those two losses coming at the hands of the #2 seed West Florida and the #1 seed West Alabama. This will be the third straight GSC Tournament appearance for the Lady Choctaws, and they haven't missed a GSC Tournament since the program's return to NCAA Division II. MC will look to repeat their success from last year's GSC Tournament as they made an appearance in the GSC Championship match but fell to last year's GSC Champions West Florida. If the Lady Choctaws and the Argonauts advance in the first round, the teams will be set for a rematch of last year's title match in the second round.
The Chargers of UAH will enter the 2019 tournament as the #6 seed. UAH will bring into the tournament an overall record of 10-10 and a record of 5-6 in the GSC. The Chargers are coming off of a loss in their final regular season match against in-state foe and #1 seed West Alabama. This will be the second GSC Tournament appearance in a row for the Chargers. Last year they were bounced in the first round by the eventual Champions, West Florida.
The last time these two teams met was way back in March of this year. On March 2, the Lady Choctaws were able to defeat the Chargers 4-1 at the MC Tennis Complex. After dropping the doubles point to UAH, MC was able to rally and take four singles matches to pick up the win. Those singles victories for the Lady Choctaws came at the hands of
Nicole Bueno,
Paulina Cota,
Aneta Golawska, and
RebeccaGrace Kimball. Â Â Â
The rest of the first round match-ups will feature the winner of the MC vs. UAH match will facing the winner of the #2 seed West Florida and the #7 seed Montevallo in the second round. On the other side of the bracket, the #1 seeded West Alabama will open the first round against the # 8 seed Delta State and the winner of that match will face the winner of the #4seed Lee and #5 seed Valdosta State in the second round.
Second round matches will take place at 9:00 A.M. on Friday May 3 and the winner of those matches will advance to the GSC Championship match on Saturday May 4 at 11:00 A.M.
The tournament will take place at the Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. Eight teams will make the trip to Montgomery and the tournament will have a single elimination format.
