Peavy's Big Day Lifts Lady Choctaws to Series Sweep of Christian Brothers

CLINTON, Miss. --- Freshman Annemarie Peavy went 5-for-8 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and eight RBI as the Mississippi College softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Christian Brothers on Saturday afternoon at Bland Field.

The Lady Choctaws (31-10, 13-7 GSC) opened the day with a 9-2 victory before cruising to a 19-0 victory in the second game over the Lady Bucs (9-30, 1-19 GSC). The 19 runs scored in the finale was the most for an MC softball team since a 22-0 win over Alice Lloyd in 2016.
 

GAME ONE: MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 9, CHRISTIAN BROTHERS 2
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
>> The Lady Choctaws scored the first run of the game as senior Alexia Harmon hit her second home run of the season in the opening inning to grab an early 1-0 lead.
>> The Lady Bucs responded with a home run of their own in the bottom of the first, a two-run shot by Mackenzie Puckett the gave CBU a 2-1 lead after an inning.
>> MC wasted not time responding with five runs on six hits in the second, highlighted by a two-run triple from junior Abbey Salvo that made the score 3-2.
>> Salvo would come home to score on a double from freshman Annemarie Peavy, while Peavy touched the plate on a single from Harmon.
>> Senior Brianna Caldwell drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single to score Harmon and give MC a 6-2 lead.
>> The Lady Choctaws would add two more runs in the third as Harmon drove in her third and fourth runs of the game with a two-out single to score Salvo and freshman Gracie Trahan.
>> The final run of the game scored in the fourth inning as junior Morgan Bradford brought sophomore Ashley Elsensohn home on a sacrifice fly to give the game its final score of 9-2.
 
KEY STATS
 
>> Harmon led the MC offense, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored and the home run in the first inning.
>> Junior Carly Crawford and Caldwell also had a pair of hits in the contest, while Trahan and Salvo joined Harmon with two runs scored.
>> Sophomore Madi Lancaster (3-0) came out of the bullpen and got the win, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings to close the game.
>> She allowed just three hits and struck out four with four walks in the contest.
>> Sierra Anderson (3-10) took the loss for the Lady Bucs, giving up five hits and five earned runs over 1.1 innings.
>> Puckett had a team-high two RBI on the two-run home run, while no one had more than one hit in the contest for CBU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
>> The second game opened with all the offense MC would need on the opening batter as Peavy led off the game with a solo home run.
>> Crawford singled home a run of her own in the frame, and the Lady Choctaws took a quick 2-0 lead.
>> The second inning saw the Lady Choctaws put up five more runs, starting with a two-run, ground-rule double by Peavy that scored Trahan and junior Shayla McKissock.
>> Crawford and senior Kristen Qualls also drove in runs in the inning to give MC a 7-0 lead going to the third.
>> The MC offense exploded in the third with eight runs, highlighted by grand slam from junior Morgan Bradford, who brought home four runs with her first home run of the season.
>> Two more of the runs came across the plate in the frame on a two-RBI triple by Harmon.
>> The final blow of the game came in the fifth inning when Peavy capped off her perfect day with a grand slam of her own for her second long ball of the contest.

KEY STATS
 
>> Peavy went 4-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBI, becoming the first Lady Choctaw with four hits in a game since Kayla Murphy turned the trick against CBU last season.
>> The seven runs batted in was the most for a Lady Choctaw since Sarah Finch brought home eight against LeTourneau on April 21, 2011.
>> Harmon and Bradford also had multi-hit games for MC, while Bradford drove in four runs and Harmon scored three.
>> Senior Cori Cooper and Hannah Creel combined to toss the shutout in the series finale, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts over 5.0 innings.
>> Puckett (2-6) took the loss for CBU, allowing four hits and four earned runs over 1.1 innings.
 
 
NEXT UP
 
The Lady Choctaws are scheduled to be back in action next Saturday when they open a three-game series with Shorter at the MC Softball Complex.
