Lady Choctaws Cruise to Doubleheader Sweep of Shorter

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team has run their winning streak to seven games after a doubleheader sweep of Shorter on Friday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.

The Lady Choctaws improved to 32-10 on the season with a 15-7 Gulf South Conference mark, while the Hawks dropped to 15-26 with an 8-17 league record.
 

GAME ONE: Mississippi College 6, Shorter 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

>> The game was a pitcher's duel outside of a six-run third inning for the Lady Choctaws.
>> The eventual game-winning run scored on a fielder's choice by senior Alexia Harmon that brought home freshman Gracie Trahan and junior Abbey Salvo.
>> Junior Carly Crawford and senior Brianna Caldwell put a couple more runs on the board with RBI singles as freshman Annemarie Peavy and Harmon scored.
>> Salvo also had an RBI singled in the inning to score senior Kristen Qualls, while freshman Grace Hahn came home on one of Shorter's three errors in the frame.
>> The Hawks had their best chance to score in the fourth with a pair of singles to open the inning, but senior Cori Cooper got a couple of strikeouts to end the threat.

KEY STATS

>> Cooper (10-6) collected the shutout win, allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks.
>> Payton Lippert (11-11) took the tough-luck loss for Shorter, giving up seven hits and three earned runs, but just one hit came outside of the third inning.
>> Crawford and Salvo each had multi-hit games for the Lady Choctaws, while six different players scored runs.
 

GAME TWO: Mississippi College 11, Shorter 0 (5 Innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED

>> The Lady Choctaws put up a 10-spot in the first inning to put the second game away early.
>> It was the first 10-run inning for an MC softball team since scoring 11 against Hiwassee back in 2014.
>> The eventual game-winning run scored when Harmon doubled to left-center field, bringing home Peavy.
>> Freshman Baylee Freudenberg got the start as the designated player and was robbed of a home run in the inning, but Crawford came home to score on the sacrifice fly.
>> Sophomore Kayla Murphy drove in a pair of runs with a double, while Salvo brought a run in with a single to make the score 7-0.
>> The big blow of the frame came when Crawford hit her 7th home run of the season, a three-run shot to score Salvo and Peavy.
>> The final run of the game scored in the second inning when Peavy singled to center field and Salvo crossed home.

KEY STATS

>> Peavy and Crawford each had a pair of hits in the game, while Crawford drove in three runs and Murphy brought in a couple.
>> Peavy, Crawford and Salvo all scored two runs in the victory.
>> Freshman Hannah Creel (14-3) allowed just three hits with four strikeouts and one walk over 5.0 innings.
>> Julie Sanderlin (3-10) took the loss, giving up three hits and five earned runs over 0.1 innings.
 

NEXT UP

>> The Lady Choctaws and Hawks will finish up the series on Saturday with a single game at 11:00 a.m. at the MC Softball Complex.
