Lady Choctaws Hang On for 4-3 Win at Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Freshman Baylee Freudenberg came off the bench and drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning with a two-out RBI double to give the Mississippi College softball team a 4-3 win over Christian Brothers on Friday afternoon at Bland Field.

The Lady Choctaws improved 29-10 on the season with an 11-7 mark in the Gulf South Conference, while the Lady Bucs fell to 9-28 with a 1-17 league record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

>> The Lady Choctaws scored two early runs as senior Brianna Caldwell stroked a two-out, two-run single in the first that scored freshman Annemarie Peavy and junior Carly Crawford.
>> The Lady Bucs responded with a solo home run in the second inning to cut the lead in half.
>> CBU would tie the game in the third on an RBI single, but Peavy turned a double play to end the threat and keep the score tied.
>> No more runs would score until the sixth when junior Abbey Salvo led off with a single, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by senior Alexia Harmon.
>> The Lady Bucs would not go away, however, as they tied the game with an RBI single of their own in the sixth, but junior Shayla McKissock threw out the go-ahead runner at the plate to keep the score 3-3.
>> The game-winning run scored for MC in the seventh when Freudenberg stroked a pinch-hit double to right-center field that brought junior Hayden Claypool across home plate.
>> Senior Cori Cooper earned her third save of the year by retiring CBU in order in the seventh to clinch the victory.

KEY STATS

>> Freshman Hannah Creel (13-3) pitched the first 6.0 innings, striking out nine batters and scattering nine hits with two earned runs.
>> Two of Creel's strikeouts came in the fifth inning as CBU put runners on second and third with one out before the rookie shut the door.
>> Cooper struck out a pair and gave up an infield pop-up to open the GSC series with a victory.
>> Peavy, Caldwell and junior Morgan Bradford had two hits apiece for the Lady Choctaws, while Caldwell had a team-high two RBI.
>> Mackenzie Puckett (2-5) took the loss for the Lady Bucs despite tossing a complete game, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts.
