Baseball Sweeps Shorter

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team secured the series sweep as the Choctaws blanked Shorter University, 3-0, in the second and final games of the series on Saturday, April 13.
 
In a game that was suspended on Friday evening due to weather, the two teams returned to Frierson Field on Saturday to resume the game in the top of the fifth with two outs. The game was declared complete in the bottom of the sixth with one out due to field conditions. The final game of the series was cancelled.
 
Luke Yancey and Brandon Broussard led the team with multiple hit performances while Payton Yawn notched a pair of RBI to pace the squad. Zack Ingram (5-2) took the win on the mound – his fifth of the season – while Ryan Lane registered his team-best, fourth save in a relief appearance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After three scoreless innings, the Choctaws broke the deadlock with four straight hits to secure the only runs they needed in the contest. Yawn started the scoring with a two-run triple down the right field line to score Brandon Broussard and Chauncey Callier. Yancey followed with a RBI single to score Yawn. The single was one of two for Yancey in the contest.
  • The Navy and Gold had two runners reach in the sixth when the game was declared complete. Billy Cameron led the inning off with a walk and one batter later, Broussard double to left field to place runners in scoring position. The hit was the second of the game for Broussard.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Ingram tossed 4.2 frames in the victory. He allowed three hits with three strikeouts in 17 batters faced.
  • Lane pitched the final 1.1 innings and surrendered just one walk in the relief effort.
 
NOTEABLES
  • The win is the fifth straight over Shorter in the series and the sixth overall.
  • The series sweep marks the sixth this season for the Choctaws, including the third straight, and fifth in GSC action.
  • Lane sits third in career saves with 10 as he broke a tie with fellow teammate Tommy Taborda.
  • With the save, Lane ranks third in the GSC this season.
