Choctaws Clinch Outright GSC Title with 2-2 Draw at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team clinched the outright Gulf South Conference regular season Championship in 2019 with a 2-2 draw at West Florida on Saturday afternoon.

The Choctaws moved to 8-1-5 overall with a 7-0-3 Gulf South Conference record. The Argos are now 11-1-3 with a 6-1-3 record in league play.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  - The Argos got off to a fast start with a goal in the 5th minute from Dani Alves on an assist from Lucas Barankiewicz.
  - They would double the lead in the 20th minute as Ed Chappe scored a penalty kick goal and the match went into the half with UWF ahead, 2-0.
  - The Choctaws wasted no time getting back into the match in the second half as senior Owen Connelly found the back of the net in the 49th minute on an assist from junior Marco Sellan.
  - The game-tying goal was scored in the 55th minute when Sellan scored an unassisted goal.
  - With the Choctaws needing just a draw to clinch the outright title, they would hang on the rest of the way to keep the score at 2-2.
 

KEY STATS
  - West Florida took 20 shots with 11 coming on goal, while the Choctaws had 11 shots with five coming on net.
  - Junior Alejandro Chavarria made a season-high nine saves with two goals allowed to help the Choctaws earn the draw.
  - Connelly netted his fifth goal of the season, while Sellan now has six goals and two assists.
 

GAME NOTES
  - The Choctaws are now 4-2-1 all-time against the Argos, including going 1-1-1 in Pensacola.
  - MC also won the Gulf South Conference regular season championship in 2016.
 

NEXT UP
  - The Choctaws will be the #1 overall seed in the GSC Tournament next week, hosting a "Super Tuesday" match at Longabaugh Field at 1:30 p.m.
  - The opponent has yet to be determined.
