Lady Choctaws Edged in Overtime

CLINTON, Miss. --- For the second straight season the Mississippi College women's basketball team and Southern Arkansas University went to overtime, but this time the Lady Choctaws came up on the short end as they fell 78-75.
 
MC had four players in double figures led by Coco Hobson's double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Zariah Matthews and Mikeba Jones joined Hobson at the top of the scoring list while Moriah Hurst added 13 points.
 
The Lady Choctaws shot 50 percent from the field in the contest and connected on 11-of-17 from the free throw line. SAU shot 39.2 percent from the floor and was 11-for-12 from the charity stripe. Both teams shot under 30 percent from behind the arc for the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lady Choctaws trailed 37-28 at the intermission, but outscored SAU 21-15 to cut into the deficit and trail 52-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
- MC grabbed its first lead since the 3:12 mark of the third with 1:24 left in the final quarter on Kaitlyn Thompson jumper. A pair of Kylie Warren free throws placed the Blue and Gold back in front, but Jones connected on the backend of two free throws to send the contest into the extra session tied at 66-all.
- The Lady Choctaws opened the overtime period with a 4-0 run and held the advantage in the period until just under a minute to play. Jones placed MC back in front with 45 ticks left in the contest, but the 17th and final lead change came on a layup by Camryn Fennell with 33 seconds left to place SAU up 76-75.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
- Hobson's double-double marked her second of the season and career sixth.
- Jones' point total marked a career-high as she surpassed her previous best of 16 set against Belhaven in the season opener.
- Jones added five steals for a career-high as she bested her previous high of three against Jackson State on Feb. 4, 2019.
- MC held a plus-12-point advantage (52-40) in the paint in the outcome.
- With the loss, Southern Arkansas tied the series with MC at three games each. SAU, which claimed its first win since 1996, has won three of the last four contests in the series.

Mississippi College opens Gulf South Conference play on Saturday, Nov. 23 as it hosts the University of West Alabama. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
