Lady Choctaw Offense Keeps Rolling in 9-1 Win at Shorter

ROME, Ga. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team won their sixth straight match with a 9-1 victory over Shorter University on Sunday afternoon at Ben Brady Field.

The Lady Choctaws improved to 6-1 with a 4-0 record in the Gulf South Conference, while the Hawks fell to 0-8 with an 0-3 league mark.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  - The Lady Choctaws cracked the scoreboard first in the 13th minute when senior Jess Davenport scored her second goal of the season on an assist from junior Lexi Pund.
  - The eventual game-winning tally was scored in the 14th minute as freshman Erin Hederman scored her second game-winner of the week, this time on a helper from senior Katie Taylor.
  - Hederman would add another goal in the 28th minute, while senior Liza Wise pushed the lead to 4-0 just moments later.
  - MC would add three more goals in the first half, starting with Davenport's second tally of the match in the 33rd minute on an assist from junior Lindsey Stephenson.
  - Freshman Anna Crapanzano added her second goal of the season on an assist by Stephenson, while sophomore Dani Avelar capped off the first-half scoring on an assist from Crapanzano in the 45th minute.
  - The Hawks were able to get on the board in the 49th minute, cutting the lead to 7-1, with a penalty kick goal from Bianca Martins da Silva.
  - The Lady Choctaws would add two more goals in the final 10 minutes as freshman Avery Hederman scored an unassisted goal and senior Madeline Porter scored her first career goal in the 85th minute on an assist from Crapanzano.
 

KEY STATS
  - The Lady Choctaws outshot the Hawks by a count of 30-5 and put 18 shots on goal against Shorter.
  - Senior Emma Claire Furman led the Lady Choctaws with seven shots and three on goal, while Taylor had five shots with three on goal.
  - Senior Gabby Kayser made two saves in the match, allowing just the one penalty kick goal.
  - Aisling Cumming led the Hawks with two shots on goal, while Emily Lopez made saves in goal.
 

MATCH NOTES
  - The Lady Choctaws have now scored at least three goals in each of their last six matches (all wins).
  - MC is now 5-1 all-time against Shorter, including winning each of the last five matches with four coming by way of a shutout.
  - The penalty kick goal for the Hawks was their first score against MC since 2014.
  - The Lady Choctaws have now scored 35 goals in 2019, putting them just two shy of their total from the entire 2018 season.
 

NEXT UP
  - The Lady Choctaws will be back at home this week to host Union (Oct. 11) and Christian Brothers (Oct. 13) at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
