Davenport's PK Golden Goal Lifts #6 Lady Choctaws at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- Senior Jess Davenport converted a penalty kick in the 106th minute to give the Mississippi College women's soccer team a 1-0 victory at Valdosta State on Friday night at the VSU Soccer Complex.

The #6 Lady Choctaws improved to 9-1 with a 7-0 record in the Gulf South Conference, while the Blazers fell to 5-5 and 3-3 in league play.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  - The Lady Choctaws controlled the pace of play in the first half, producing 10 shots with six on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
  - The second half, however, was more event as the Blazers outshot MC (7-6) and put four shots on goal compared to just six for the Lady Choctaws as the match was scoreless after 90 minutes.
  - In the first overtime, it was MC that provided the only scoring opportunity as freshman Erin Hederman put a shot on frame that was saved by Caroline Embler.
  - Just over five minutes into the second overtime, senior Katie Taylor was taken down in the box, allowing Davenport to score her second game-winning goal in as many outings.
  - The Widnes, England native notched her fifth goal of the season, burying the ball in the lower-left corner to give MC their 9th straight win.
 

KEY STATS
  - The Lady Choctaws tallied 20 total shots with 13 coming on goal over the 105 minutes played.
  - The Blazers produced nine shots in the match but they could not muster even one over the overtime periods.
  - Senior Gabby Kayser and the MC defense recorded their fourth shutout of the season and third straight, not allowing a goal in the last 237 minutes of play.
  - Embler made 12 saves in goal for the Blazers, keeping VSU in the contest until the final five minutes.
 

MATCH NOTES
  - Kayser is now in a tie for 3rd in MC history with 25 victories as a goalkeeper. She is tied with Bethany Roberson (2009-12).
  - Her four shutouts this season give her 13 for her career, sitting just one behind Roberson for 3rd all-time.
  - The Lady Choctaws are now 5-0-1 all-time against Valdosta State, winning three straight in the series by a score of 1-0.
  - They have produced five straight shutouts against the Blazers, not allowing a goal in the series since a 1-1 draw in Valdosta on October 5, 2014.
 

NEXT UP
  - The Lady Choctaws are scheduled to be back in action on Sunday when they face West Georgia at 12:00 p.m. (Central) in Carrollton, Ga.
