Lady Choctaws Put Out Flames 3-1

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi women's soccer team remained unbeaten in Gulf South Conference play with a big 3-1 victory over the Lee University Flames.

MC will improve to 7-1-0 overall and 5-0 in GSC play.

Lee will fall to 6-3-1 overall and 3-2 in GSC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first half of back and forth play, the Lady Choctaws came out aggressive in the second half and it lead to them taking an early lead. Lindsey Stephenson was able to get MC on the board in the 46th minute by striking a deflected ball into net making it 1-0.
- The Lady Choctaws were able to extend their lead in the 51st minute when Emma Claire Furman was able to finish a ball deflected by the Lee keeper and give MC a 2-0 lead.
- MC put the finishing touches on the Flames in 73rd minute when Rita Okoro's cross found the head of Katie Taylor who put it past the keeper extending the lead to 3-0.
- The Flames would add a goal late in the 82nd minute from the foot of Riley Engels to give the match its final score of 3-1.

KEY STATS
- The Choctaws remain unbeaten in GSC play in 2018 and have only allowed the lone goal to the Flames in that five game stretch.
- Emma Claire Furman continued her stellar play as of late, with her goal Sunday she now has four on the year which is tied for the team lead and all four of her goals have come in the last three matches.
- Lindsey Stephenson became the tenth Lady Choctaw to score a goal this season, the team had fourteen different players score a goal last year.
- The victory over Lee felt extra special for the Lady Choctaws as it avenged their loss to Lee in the GSC tournament a year ago.

NEXT UP
- The Lady Choctaws will be back in GSC action next weekend when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. on October 5 to face Christian Brothers and then go to Jackson, Tenn. on Sunday October 7 to face Union.
