Softball Preview: Christian Brothers

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team will wrap up an eight-game homestand this weekend when they host Christian Brothers for a three-game series at the MC Softball Complex.

The Lady Choctaws (21-11) and Lady Bucs (7-28) are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

THE SERIES

MC and CBU have met 12 previous times with the Lady Choctaws holding an 11-1 edge in the series. They have swept two straight season series with the Lady Bucs' only win coming on Feb. 15, 2015 by a score of 11-6 in Memphis. Over the past two seasons, MC has allowed just two runs over six games, outscoring CBU, 52-2, overall.

Last year, MC opened the series with a 12-1 victory and swept a doubleheader with an 8-0 win. They closed things out with an 11-0 victory in the finale. The Lady Choctaws had at least 10 hits in all three games and made just one defensive error.

The Lady Choctaws, led by 12th-year head coach Brooke O'Hair, have won 10 of their last 11 games, including five straight after a series sweep of Union last weekend and a doubleheader sweep of Miles on Wednesday. In the two wins over the Golden Bears, MC outscored their opponents 20-3.

The offense has been playing long ball lately with home runs in each of their last seven games and 32 on the season, which already matches the total of the 2017 team. The most home runs ever by a Lady Choctaw team came in 2011 when they hit 37.

Senior Katherine Lee (.360) is the team's leading hitter, also pacing the squad with 23 stolen bases to give her over 100 for her career, the first Lady Choctaw to ever achieve that mark. She has recorded at least two hits in each of the last four games, including going 5-for-7 in the doubleheader sweep of Miles.

Seven different Lady Choctaws are now hitting over .300 on the season as junior Brianna Caldwell (.327) has a team-high nine home runs and freshman Jessica Aron (327) leads the squad with four triples. Junior Alexia Harmon (.318), the reigning GSC Player of the Week, has scored a team-best 26 runs.

Junior Kristen Qualls (.276) leads the team with 31 RBI and hit her 27th career home run against Miles, tying her for MC's all-time record, set by Brooke Smitherman (2011-15). Sophomore Shayla McKissock (.349) hit her first career home run in the first game against Miles.

In the circle, junior Cori Cooper (7-1, 2.03 ERA) leads the team with 51.2 innings pitched and 46 strikeouts. Junior Adrianna Morgan (6-0, 3.05 ERA) has yet to drop a contest this season, while senior Kristen Gardner (3-3, 5.76 ERA) and freshman Madi Lancaster (2-2, 3.61 ERA) each picked up wins on Wednesday. Junior Penny Nichols (3-5, 4.80 ERA) was a Preseason All-GSC selection this season.
