Softball Preview: #22 UAH

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team will put their eight-game winning streak on the line this weekend when they travel to Huntsville, Ala. for a three-game series with #22 UAH at Charger Park.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday (April 13) at 2:00 p.m. with the series finale scheduled for Saturday (April 14) at 11:00 a.m.
 

THE SERIES

MC and UAH have met nine previous times with the Lady Choctaws holding a 5-4 edge in the series. There have been several momentous games for MC against the Chargers, including Carlie Sargent tossing a perfect game on April 16, 2016.. The Lady Choctaws also won the first GSC championship for a women's program in school history with an 18-5 victory last season.

Last season, MC won 3-of-4 from the Chargers, taking two games in the series in Clinton and finishing with the GSC championship victory. In the win, the Lady Choctaws tallied 20 hits with seven players logging multiple base-knocks. Tournament MOP Kristen Qualls had three hits and three runs scored, while Carly Crawford and Lauren Mulligan each drove in three runs.

The Lady Choctaws, led by 12th-year head coach Brooke O'Hair, are 17-3 over the last 20 games and have moved up to the #4 spot in the GSC standings heading into the final three weekends of the regular season. MC is coming off a pair of sweeps of Union and Christian Brothers.

Over those 20 games, MC is hitting .333 with 24 home runs, averaging 7.3 runs per contest. During that stretch, junior Makenzie Nieto is hitting .442 with four doubles and four home runs. Junior Alexia Harmon is hitting .412 with five home runs, while freshman Jessica Aron is hitting .407 with four triples. Junior Brianna Caldwell is hitting .377 with six long balls over the 20 games.

On the season, Nieto (.373) has been the team's top hitter with a squad-high seven doubles. Sophomore Carly Crawford (.357) is just behind with six doubles and 19 RBI, despite missing 14 games on the year. Caldwell (.349) has a team-high 11 home runs, while senior Katherine Lee (.339) leads the team with 27 stolen bases.

Freshman Kayla Murphy (.288) had a big day on Saturday against CBU, going 4-for-4 with a double in the series-clinching victory. She is second on the team 29 RBI and 22 stolen bases, leading the squad with 21 RBI over the past 20 games.

In the circle, junior Cori Cooper (8-1, 2.03 ERA) leads the team in innings pitched (58.2), strikeouts (54) and opponent batting average (.220). Junior Adrianna Morgan (7-0, 2.78 ERA) has yet to drop a contest this year, while senior Kristen Gardner (4-3, 5.12 ERA) tossed a complete game with four strikeouts and no walks in the series finale against CBU.

The Chargers, led by 23rd-year and only head coach in school history Les Stuedeman, have won at least 40 games every season since 1998. In their last two GSC series, they picked up a sweep of West Alabama and were swept by Shorter. Last time out, UAH dropped a pair of games to #2 North Georgia. They currently rank 3rd in the league in batting average (.343), 5th in earned run average (3.43) and 10th in fielding percentage (.952).

Reagan Malone (.453) is the team's leading hitter with 38 runs scored and six triples. Shelby Booker (.382) has also scored 38 times, while Brooke Miller (.361) leads the squad with 15 doubles. Kiara Akles (.342) has a team-high 10 home runs, followed by Alaina Hampton (.336) with nine.

Layton Murphy (14-7, 2.05 ERA) leads the team with 75 strikeouts and 15 complete games in 119.1 innings. Jada Hayes (5-2, 4.05 ERA) has made 14 relief appearances for the Chargers.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and started competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
