Men's Basketball Preview: Pensacola Christian

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will play their final non-conference game of the season on Saturday (Dec. 8) when they host Pensacola Christian. Tip-off in A.E. Wood Coliseum is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE

The Choctaws are led by 15th-year head coach Don Lofton, who has posted a career record of 216-158 (.578). He is joined on the bench by first-year assistant coach Alex Ainsworth and former Choctaw Otis Harvey as a graduate assistant.

MC split a pair of game on the GSC's opening weekend, coming back from 17 points down to defeat Montevallo on Thursday (Nov. 29), 74-69. They then traveled to Livingston, Ala. and fell to West Alabama in overtime (81-79), despite Brandon Boston and Marcus Lytle scoring 27 points apiece.

Boston (16.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, while Lytle (14.3 ppg) is shooting over 50% from the foor. Dyllan Taylor (10.7 ppg) leads the team with 32 assists, while Tre Jenkins (12.7 ppg) is 20-of-44 (46%) from long range.
 

SCOUTING PENSACOLA CHRISTIAN

The Eagles are led by 25th-year head coach Mark Goetsch, and assisted by DeMarlon Gardner. PCC has lost two straight games after snapping an 11-game losing streak with a victory over Coastal Alabama CC on Nov. 30.

Dakota Pratt (13.4 ppg, 6.6 rpg) is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, shooting 50% from the field while starting all 14 games. Jared McCrillis (13.3 ppg) is also averaging in double-figures, while Ian Johnson (11.4 ppg) is the only other player to start all 14 games.

The Eagles are allowing 89.1 points per game, while opponents are shooting 40% from the three-point line.
 

GAME NOTES

This will be the 8th all-time meeting between the two schools with MC winning all seven contests.

The Choctaws have won all but one game by double-figures, including a 73-61 victory the last time they played on November 16, 2013. Rayner Frederick scored a team-high 18 points with seven rebounds and six assists in the win.

MC is 2-2 in non-conference games with wins over Belhaven (97-80) and Henderson State (78-73) and losses to Talladega (88-84 (OT)) and Southern Arkansas (68-57).

This will be the first game the Choctaws play against a team from the State of Florida. They are scheduled to face West Florida on January 12th and February 16th.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
