CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College ranked 54th overall and 3rd in the Gulf South Conference in the final edition of the Learfield Cup standings for the fall season, it was announced on Thursday (Dec. 20).
The Choctaws and Lady Choctaws earned points from men's cross country's top five finish at regionals and women's soccer advancing to the regional title game for the first time in program history.
Overall, eight GSC schools were ranked in the final fall standings, led by Lee (179 pts, 14th) and Valdosta State (100 pts, 47th). Following MC (93 pts, 54th) were West Florida (75 pts, 70th), UAH (57 pts, 102nd), West Alabama (50 pts, 107th), Union (38 pts, 126th) and West Georgia (25 pts, 132nd).
The 2017-18 academic year final standings found MC ranked ranked 153rd with 125 points, ranking tied for 7th in the GSC. They picked up points for the baseball team advancing in regional play and the women's tennis team getting to the Division II Tournament for the first time in school history.
The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
