Choctaws Come All the Way Back for 74-69 Win Over Montevallo

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team erased a 17-point second-half deficit on their way to a 74-69 victory over Montevallo on Thursday night in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Choctaws improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference, while the Falcons dropped to 3-5 and 0-1 in league play.
 

TURNING POINT

- With 15:29 remaining in the contest, Cam Copeland hit a pair of free throws for the Falcons to make the score 49-32.
- The Choctaws would use a 25-7 run over the next eight minutes, including an 11-0 sprint, capped off by one of five three-pointers from junior Tre Jenkins.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Falcons would jump out to a 20-8 lead with 10:58 to go in the first half after a jumper from Jeremiah Curtis.
- Montevallo would lead by as many as 12 in the first half, but the score would be 37-28 in favor of the Falcons going to the break.
- The Falcons would then grab their largest lead of the night at 49-32 after a 10-4 run to open the second half.
- The Choctaws began to chip away as Jenkins and junior Scot Hundt hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the advantage to 49-38.
- Sophomore Dyllan Taylor opened the 11-0 run with a three-pointer, while senior Marcus Lytle would give MC their first lead since early in the first half on a jumper with 7:41 to go.
- The game would go back and forth until Hundt hit his fourth long ball of the night to make the score 67-63 with 2:56 remaining.
- The Choctaws would not trail the rest of the night and open GSC play with the 74-69 victory.
 

KEY STATS

- The Choctaws put five players in double-figures, led by Jenkins with 16 points off the bench.
- Junior Brandon Boston scored 16, followed by Lytle (13), Taylor (12) and Hundt (12), who set a season-high with his output.
- Boston and Lytle led the team with six rebounds apiece, while Taylor racked up a team-high seven assists.
- The Choctaws shot 47% (27-of-58) from the field, including 53% (16-of-30) in the second half.
- MC was 10-of-25 (40%) from long range, including hitting 7-of-13 in the second 20 minutes.
- The Falcons led for 30:15 of the contest, while the Choctaws held the advantage for just 7:13.
- Montevallo scored 44 points in the paint, while the Choctaws forced 17 turnovers on the night.
- Wade Lowman led the Falcons with 18 points, going 7-of-9 from the field with a team-high nine rebounds.
- Micah Fuller added 15 points, while Demarco Owens scored 13.
 

GAME NOTES

- The Falcons now hold a 3-2 edge in the all-time series against MC.
- The Choctaws grabbed their first win over Montevallo since November 25, 1995 (77-63).
- MC opened the the season with a Gulf South Conference win for the second straight year after a 69-68 victory over Union last season.

- The Choctaws will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Livingston, Ala. to face West Alabama at 4:00 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
