Men's Basketball Preview: Henderson State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will play their final home game before Thanksgiving when they host Henderson State on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 4:00 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE

The Choctaws are led by 15th-year head coach Don Lofton, who has posted a career record of 214-156 (.578). He is joined on the bench by first-year assistant coach Alex Ainsworth and former Choctaw Otis Harvey as a graduate assistant.

The season opened with a 97-80 win over Belhaven for the Choctaws. They then dropped a Monday night contest with Talladega in overtime, 88-84. MC ranks 2nd in the Gulf South Conference in scoring (90.5 ppg) and lead the league in free throw shooting (.860).

Brandon Boston (20.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg) is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, shooting 47% from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Donovan Ham (17.5 ppg) is shooting 52% from the floor, while Dyllan Taylor (14.0 ppg) leads the team with 12 assists through two contests.
 

SCOUTING HENDERSON STATE

The Reddies are led by 4th-year head coach Jimmy Elgas, who has posted a 42-46 record at HSU. He is assisted on the bench by Mark Rutledge and Darius Tomlin.

They have opened the season with three straight wins, including a 103-61 victory over Ecclesia College on Tuesday night. Terrence Parker posted a double-double (11 pts, 12 rebs) in the victory.

Rel Johnson (16.3 ppg) is the team's leading scorer, shooting 63% from the field and hitting all seven of his three-point attempts. Anthony Lupardus (12.3 ppg) and Chris Parker (12.3 ppg) are also averaging in double-figures, while Terrence Parker (6.0 ppg) has a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game.
 

GAME NOTES

This will be the 12th all-time meeting between the two schools with MC holding a 7-4 edge in the series. The Choctaws and Reddies have not played since an 82-74 MC win on February 10, 1996. The Choctaws are 4-1 all-time when the teams play in Clinton.

The Choctaws allowed just three three-point makes in their win over Belhaven. They gave up 13 made three-pointers in the loss to Talladega.

MC was +9 in the rebounding margin in the win over Belhaven and -15 in the loss to Talladega.

The Choctaws are averaging 20.5 points off of turnovers in 2018, including a season-high 25 against Talladega.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2018-19 academic year.
