Men's Basketball Preview: Talladega

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will be back in action on Monday night when they host Talladega College at 7:00 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE

The Choctaws are led by 15th-year head coach Don Lofton, who has posted a career record of 214-155 (.580). He is joined on the bench by first-year assistant coach Alex Ainsworth and former Choctaw Otis Harvey as a graduate assistant.

The 2018-19 campaign opened on Friday night with a 97-80 home victory over Belhaven. Brandon Boston tallied a double-double with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Isaiah Austin came off the bench to score 15, while Donovan Ham (14), Dyllan Taylor (12) and Tre Jenkins (11) also scored in double figures.

The Choctaws tallied 22 assists in the contest, led by eight from Taylor. They would also force 18 Blazer turnovers and score 16 points off those giveaways.

As a team, MC shot 20-of-31 (64.5%) from the floor in the second half, giving them a 54% clip for the game. The Choctaws were also clutch at the free throw line, hitting 16-of-18.
 

SCOUTING TALLADEGA

The Tornados are led by first-year head coach Chris Wright, who is assisted by Cody San Miguel and Rodney Clarke. The opened the year with four straight wins before an overtime loss to Lyon College (70-69). Talladega opened Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, defeating Rust College, 108-78.

As a team, the Tornados are scoring 85.3 points per game and allowing just 69.2. They are shooting 48% from the field and outrebounding their opponents, 50-28, on average.

Da'Jon Streeter (20.8 ppg) is the team's leading scorer, shooting 42% from the field and 34% from the three-point line. Jaron Hilson (14.4 ppg) leads the team with 27 assists, while Dondre Alexander (11.4 ppg) has a team-high 11.8 rebounds per game with 10 blocked shots.
 

GAME NOTES

This will be just the third all-time meeting between the two schools with each team winning a game.

The Choctaws picked up an 89-81 win at Talladega on December 9, 1995, while the Tornados grabbed an 82-79 victory in Clinton on February 1, 1996.

The Choctaws have started 2-0 nine times in 14 seasons under Coach Lofton, including in four of the last six seasons.

Coach Lofton ranks 2nd in school history with 214 victories behind Athletic Director Mike Jones, who won 332 games in his tenure. He is also 4th in school history with 368 career games coached.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2018-19 academic year.
