Lady Choctaws Stunned in GSC Tournament by Montevallo

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team was stunned on this "Super Tuesday" afternoon in the First Round of the Gulf South Conference post-season tournament by the Montevallo Falcons with the final scoring being 1-0.

The Lady Choctaws will fall to 14-3-0 overall and were eliminated from the tournament with the loss.

The Falcons will improve to 9-6-3 overall and will advance to the Semi Finals of the GSC Tournament with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lady Choctaws entered the contest as the #2 seed in the tournament, while the Falcons entered as the #7 seed. This was the second meeting between the two schools this season, with MC earning a 2-1 victory over the Falcons on Oct. 19.
- The familiar foes were evenly matched it the first half as neither team was able to score and the match went into the half tied at 0-0.
- In the second half both teams still remained tied until the 75th minute when a scary injury occurred. Montevallo's Allye Darnell collided with the MC goalkeeper Andrea McDonald which resulted in a serious lower body injury for Darnell. McDonald was fortunately unharmed on the play but Darnell had to be stretchered off the pitch. We here at MC offer our thoughts and prayers to Allye Darnell and her family with hopes of a quick recovery.
- After the stoppage of play Montevallo became the aggressor and was finally able to put one on the board. Melanie Stevens was able to find Victoria Whitehouse who struck it by McDonald into the bottom left corner of the net giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the 83rd minute.
- MC's comeback attempts were stopped by Montevallo and the upset was complete by the Falcons with the final score remaining 1-0.

KEY STATS
- It was a hard fought but clean contest between the two schools with both teams only combining for 12 fouls in the match.
- Offensively MC was able to outshoot the Falcons 15 to 9 but were unable to score being shutout for only the second time this year.
- It was Montevallo's first win all-time against MC having been 0-3 prior to Tuesday's match and with the win the Falcons were able to keep their season alive and advance to the GSC tournament Semi Finals this weekend in Montgomery, Ala.

NEXT UP
- With the loss, the Lady Choctaws were eliminated from the GSC tournament but their season may not be over. MC will await a chance to receive an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament Regionals which they were ranked third in NCAA Regional standings before Tuesday's match against Montevallo. The selection show will take place on Nov. 5th at 5:30 P.M.
