Furman's Late Goal Lifts Lady Choctaws to 10th Straight Win

CLINTON, Miss. --- Junior Emma Claire Furman scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 81st minute to lead the Mississippi College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Valdosta State on Sunday afternoon at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.

The Lady Choctaws (11-1, 9-0 GSC) won their 10th consecutive match, which is the second longest streak in school history behind the 2003 squad that won 11 straight.

The Blazers fell to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in Gulf South Conference action.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The match did not produce many great scoring chances in the first half as the teams combined for just six total shots with three coming on goal.
- The second half saw the intensity pick up as both goalkeepers were forced to make two saves in the half.
- The Lady Choctaws finally broke through in the 81st minute as senior Katie Taylor sent a beautiful cross from the right side the Furman finished off directly in front of goal.
 

KEY STATS

- The Lady Choctaws outshot the Blazers in the match, 11-6.
- For Furman, she took the team lead with her fifth goal of the season, while Taylor notched her third assist.
- Gabby Kayser pitched her sixth shutout of the season, improving to 9-1 on the year with a 0.60 goals against average. She made three saves in the match.
- Caroline Embler took the loss in net for the Blazers, despite making four saves.
 

NEXT UP

- The Lady Choctaws will be back in action next Friday when they travel to Alabama to face Montevallo at 5:00 p.m.
