Women's Basketball Preview: Lee, Shorter

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team returns to Gulf South Conference action as it travels to Cleveland, Tenn., to face Lee University on Saturday, Jan. 20. MC closes out the road swing on Monday, Jan. 22 at Shorter University. Tip-off at Lee is slated for 1 p.m. while the start of the contest at Shorter is marked for 3 p.m. Both times are listed as central.

THE SERIES
 
•    Lee holds the series advantage over Mississippi College at 6-0. Mississippi College and Shorter meet for the seventh time and the fourth meeting in Rome, Ga., The Lady Hawks lead the all-time series at 4-2. MC snapped a four-game skid to SU last season with a 61-54 win in Clinton, Miss. The Lady Choctaws are 2-1 on their home floor in the series while Shorter holds a 3-0 mark on its home floor.

 
MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE NOTES
 
•    In the win over Montevallo on Monday, two Lady Choctaws posted a double-double in the same game for the first time since Jan. 14, 2017. Kelley Allen led the team with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Lauran Sheriff added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
•    MC had four total players in double figures as Ieisha Lacey posted 15 points and Zariah Matthews chimed in 11 points in the win. It marks just the second time this season the Navy and Gold has had four players score in double figures.
•    The win snapped a four-game slide by the Lady Choctaws and gave head coach Paul Allen Duke his first win over Montevallo and the program's second win in the short, three-game series.
•    MC shot 93.5 percent from the free throw line in the win to reset its previous season-high of 77.8 set against Auburn Montgomery earlier this season.
•    The Lady Choctaws outrebounded Montevallo by 10 in the victory (44-34). The rebounding effort marks the first time has registered 40-plus boards in a game since Dec. 30 against Tougaloo.
•    Mississippi College holds the eighth toughest basketball schedule in Division II according to NCAA stats. The slate is tied with Colorado State-Pueblo.
•    A trio of Lady Choctaws average double figures in scoring this season led by Allen's 13.7 points per game. The Puckett, Miss., native also leads the team on the glass with 10.3 boards as she stands as the only player in the GSC averaging a double-double this season.
•    Lacey and Sheriff sit behind the senior post player. Lacey has 11.6 points per game while Sheriff averages 10.9.
 
LEE NOTES
 
•    Lee is 14-3 on the season as the weekend approaches and 7-2 in the conference. The Flames are currently riding a five-game win streak with decisions over GSC foes Shorter, West Alabama, Montevallo, West Florida and Valdosta State.
•    Erin Walsh and Carrie Cheeks lead LU in scoring this season. Walsh has posted a team-best 13.5 points per game while Cheeks has added 10.3. Cheeks also has a team-best 7.5 rebounds per contest.

SHORTER NOTES
 
•    Shorter currently sits with a 4-11 mark and 2-7 in the GSC after falling 71-55 at Lee University on Jan. 13. Jasmine Gaines led the Lady Hawks with 25 points in the loss at Lee while Bianca Thornton added 12 points.
•    Gaines and Thorton led SU in scoring this season. Gaines has registered a team-best 12.0 points per contest while Thornton averages 11.3. BreAnna Thompson paces the Blue and White on the glass with 8.1 rebounds per outing.
•    Head coach Dawn Brown faces Mississippi College for the first time in her career. Brown, in her first season in Rome, Ga., spent the previous four seasons at the helm of the Prairie View A&M program.
