CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team displayed a strong offensive outing, tally a season-high four goals, in their 4-2 victory over number 15-ranked Ouachita Baptist University on Friday afternoon.
TURNING POINT
- Senior midfielder Jacob Farthing connected for his first goal of the season in the 48th minute, off of a Julio Moreno corner kick. The goal gave MC its largest lead of the game, and enough breathing room to secure a 4-2 victory over the Tigers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior midfielder Dinho Zwane gave the Choctaws a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute off the contest. Freshman forward Victor Bazan fired a shot that hit off of the post, and found Zwane's foot for the score.
- The Choctaws would go on the double their lead in the 38th minute, when Horacio Gutierrez Jr. connected for his team-leading second goal of the season, with the help of Zwane. The Choctaws would take the 2-0 into the half.
- Ouachita Baptist would go on to score two goals in a less-than-three minute span later in the half. Tucker Johnston (56') and Blaine Hickman (59') both connected for goals for the Tigers. Farthing's 48th minute goal, however, provided a security blanket that helped preserve the MC lead.
- Bazan provided MC with an insurance goal in the 87th minute, when he connected off of a Connor Johnson pass for the score.
KEY STATS
- Zwane led all MC players with three points on the afternoon. The Johannesburg, South Africa native registered his first goal and assist of the 2017 season in the match.
- The Choctaws took a season-high 25 shots in the contest, with 15 in the first half and ten in the second half.
- Of the Choctaws 25 shots, 12 were on frame.
- In goal, Humberto Pelaez grabbed four saves on the afternoon. The Senior keeper improved his record to 2-0-1 on the year.
- The Choctaws took six corner kicks in the match, while holding the Tigers to just three.
- MC was tagged for just five fouls on the day, while Ouachita Baptist was charged with 10.
MATCH NOTES
- Farthing's goal in the match brought his point total to a team-high five on the year. Moreno, who assisted on the score, tallied his first assist in 2017 as a result of the score.
- Bazan's score late in the match accounted for his first as a Choctaw.
- With the win, the Choctaws improve to 2-0-1 on the season.
UP NEXT
- The Choctaws look ahead to Sunday, Sept. 10, when they face off against Harding University. Match time at Longabaugh Field is slated for 3:00 p.m.
