Lady Choctaws Use First-Half Scoring Spree to Charge Past UAH

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team used a three-goal first half to cruise to a 4-1 victory over the Chargers of the University Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday Afternoon.
 
TURNING POINT
  • Sophomore forward Emma Claire Furman took a pass from freshman midfielder Emily McNair and sent a shot that successfully bent into the back corner, giving MC a 3-1 lead and critical momentum heading into the half. The assist marked for McNair's first as a Lady Choctaw.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior forward Lauren Smith broke the scoreless tie in the 7th minute, when freshman Lindsey Stephenson was able to partially deflect a goal kick and find the foot of Smith for the score and for her first assist as a Lady Choctaw.
  • The Chargers tied the game up in the 20th minute, when Sydney Pkankuch knocked in a goal with the help of Riley Ridgeway.
  • MC would retake the lead in the 34th minute, when Freshman Holly Pascoe netted her first goal as a Lady Choctaw.
  • With the score at 3-1 in the second half, Stephenson delivered the final blow in the contest in the 65th minute, by firing a rocket into the back nylon for her collegiate goal. Katie Taylor helped set up the score for her first assist of the year.
 
KEY STATS
  • Stephenson racked up a team-best three points on the day, accounting for both a goal and an assist.  
  • The Lady Choctaws took a season-high 35 shots on the afternoon, including 11 shots on goal
  • The Lady Choctaw defense put together another solid outing, allowing just three shots and two shots on goal in the match.
  • In Goal, Gabby Kayser, picked up her team-leading second victory on the season, while grabbing two saves in the process. The sophomore keeper's record now sits at 2-0 for the season.
  • The Lady Choctaws took five corner kicks in the match, while holding the Chargers to just one.
  • MC was tagged for eight fouls, while UAH was on the receiving end of 11.
 
MATCH NOTES
  • With the win, The Lady Choctaws improve to 3-0-1, and 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play.
  • UAH's lone score in the 19th minute accounted for the first goal that the MC defense has given up all season, ending a streak of 309 consecutive scoreless minutes to begin the season.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Lady Choctaws will travel to Rome, Ga. to take on Shorter University for their first road GSC contest of 2017. Match time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
