Choctaws Foiled by Shorter

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team fell 15-4 in the series finale against Shorter University. MC moves to 2-17 on the season and 0-9 in Gulf South Conference action. The Hawks improve to 12-5 and 4-5 in the conference.
 
KEY STATS
  • A trio of Choctaws recorded multiple hit efforts in the setback led by Blaine Crim's 2-for-4 afternoon as he also posted a multi-RBI. Casey Echols and Chance Whitten each added two hits in the contest.
  • Shorter hit five home runs in the contest, including two from Isaiah Maddela.
  • MC sent five pitchers to the hill in the contest with Matt Payne recording the longest out with 2.0 innings with three strikeouts and a hit allowed.
  • Jake Fraze (2-3) took the loss on the mound with 1.0 of action in the start as he allowed six runs – four earned – on six hits with four walks and a strikeout.
  • Jerry Liang (2-0) tossed a complete game for the Blue and White. Liang gave up four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shorter jumped on the board early with four runs in the first and second innings to take an 8-0 lead through an inning and a half. The Hawks logged two their home runs in the second inning with a two-run homer from Williams Winslow and Maddela's first of the day, also a two-run homer.
  • The Choctaws cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs, the first coming on a Grant Barber bases loaded walk that pushed Crim across the plate. Kyle Smith followed with a RBI, bunt single to narrow the lead to 8-2.
  • The Hawks responded with four runs in the top of the third headlined by Blaze Vazquez's three-run home run.
  • MC added a run in the home half of the third as Echols scored on a ground out to cut the deficit to 12-3
  • Shorter added its final runs with a two-run homer run in the fourth by Raul Cortez and a solo shot from Maddela in the sixth to claim a 15-3 advantage.
  • The Choctaws recorded their final run in the bottom of the seventh as Crim hit a RBI single to score Echols.
 
NEXT UP
  • Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 7 as it travels to Monticello, Ark., to face the University of Arkansas at Monticello. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
