Choctaws Wrap Up 2016-17 with Strong Finish

LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team closed out the 2016-17 season with their second straight road victory in a 74-71 win over West Alabama at Pruitt Hall on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Otis Harvey put the first points of the game on the board with a three-pointer just over a minute into the contest. Senior DeOndre Haynes assisted on the bucket that gave the Choctaws (7-19, 4-18 GSC) a 3-0 lead.
- The Tigers (10-18, 5-17 GSC) would go on a 10-0 run in the first 10 minutes of the game to grab a 15-7 lead, the largest advantage of the contest.
- MC would respond with an 18-2 run over seven minutes that gave the Choctaws their largest lead of the night at 25-17.
- Freshman Brandon Boston would knock down two free throws with 1:32 for the final points of the half as the Choctaws took a 31-25 lead into the break.
- In the second half, the Choctaws would keep the lead until Gavin Robinson hit a jumper for UWA that tied the score at 42-42 with 12:46 left in the game.
- The lead would change hands several times over the next six minutes, but the Tigers grabbed a 57-53 lead with 6:25 remaining.
- The Choctaws used a 7-0 run to grab the lead back and the contest would teeter down the stretch.
- Junior Stacey Mack hit a couple free throws with 39 seconds remaining to give the Choctaws a 70-64 lead.
- The Tigers would not go away however, cutting the lead down to 71-69 in the final 10 seconds, but Haynes would put the game away at the free throw line, going 3-of-4 in the final seconds of his Choctaw career.

KEY STATS
- Haynes, who scored 18 or more points in each of his last six contests, put up a game-high 25 with five assists, closing out his career with 499 points.
- The Calera, Ala. native finished the season as the team's leading scorer (14.7 ppg), shooting 49% from the field with a team-high 98 assists.
- Sophomore Xavion Dillon scored 20 points, hitting 10 free throws for the second consecutive game.
- Junior Stacey Mack scored 11 points with a team-high seven rebounds. The McComb native scored in double-figures in each of the last 18 games of the 2016-17 season.
- The Choctaws went 28-of-38 (74%) from the free throw line, while the Tigers were 19-of-22 (86%).
- Five Tigers scored in double-figures, led by 15 from Johnny Stallworth and 13 off the bench from Robinson.
- Domonique Alexander tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots.

NEXT UP
- The Choctaws closed out the 2016-17 season with the win on Saturday, going 3-2 in their last five games. The 2017-18 season schedule has yet to be finalized and released.
