Choctaws Take Tough Road Loss at Christian Brothers, 92-86

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team jumped out to an early 10-point lead, but Christian Brothers came back to get a 92-86 win on Thursday night in Canale Arena.
 

TURNING POINT
  • The Bucs (15-10, 12-7 GSC) used a 13-0 run in the first half to take a 28-23 lead with 4:52 remaining and would not trail the rest of the night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a three-pointer by CBU to open the game, the Choctaws (5-18, 2-17 GSC) would go on a 17-4 run to take their largest lead of the game at 17-7 with 11:16 remaining in the first half.
  • Sophomore Xavion Dillon converted a layup with 8:28 remaining to push the score to 23-15 before the Bucs went on the 13-0 run.
  • With just 1:14 remaining in the opening half, junior Antonio Johnson nailed a jumper to tie the game at 33-33.
  • CBU would hit a couple threes at the end of the half to take a 39-33 lead in to the break.
  • They would also hit a long ball to open the second half and cap a 9-0 run that would open up the advantage.
  • Brad Miller hit one of his six three-pointers on the night with 18:39 to go in the game to take the largest lead of the night for CBU at 48-34.
  • The Choctaws would chip away at the lead and Johnson's three-point play with 5:19 remaining cut the score to 73-69.
  • The Bucs would push  the lead back out to nine, but Johnson stayed hot from the outside, hitting three long balls in the final 1:30 to cut the score to 90-86 with 20 seconds to go.
  • CBU was able to hold off the late charge and grab the 92-86 victory.
 
KEY STATS
  • Both teams shot over 50% on the night with the Choctaws going 31-of-60 (52%) and the Bucs going 30-of-55 (55%).
  • The Choctaws went 6-of-10 from the three-point line and 18-of-21 (86%) from the charity stripe.
  • CBU won the game from long range, going 13-of-29 (45%) from the three-point line.
  • The Choctaws outrebounded CBU 38-21, including pulling down 13 offensive rebounds for 16 second-chance points.
  • Four Choctaws finished in double-figures, led by Johnson with 23 points, going 8-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-6 from long range.
  • Junior Stacey Mack recorded his 6th double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Senior DeOndre Haynes (18) and Dillon (12) also scored in double-figures for the Choctaws.
  • Senior Byron McCall finished the game with five points and eight rebounds, while Johnson had a team-high six assists.
  • Joe Laravie led the Bucs with 22 points, while Miller added 21 and Jeff Larkin had 18.
  • The Bucs took care of the basketball, tallying 21 assists with just five turnovers.
 
NEXT UP
  • The Choctaws will play their final home game of the season on Saturday (Feb. 18) as they host Union at 4:00 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum. MC will celebrate "Senior Day" at halftime of the women's game, honoring Jared Case, DeOndre Haynes and Byron McCall, who are playing their final home game for the Choctaws.
