CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team opened the "Falcon Frenzy" with an 8-4 win over the University of Montevallo on Friday night at Montevallo Softball Stadium at Orr Park.
TURNING POINT
- The Lady Choctaws (3-2) jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the second inning, highlighted by RBI singles from senior
Megan Everett and junior
Katherine Lee.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, MC grabbed the game's first run as freshman
Carly Crawford drove in senior
Tylan Buckley on a fielder's choice in the second.
- Sophomore
Makenzie Nieto scored on a groundout before the RBI singles by Lee and Everett. Senior
Lauren Mulligan also came home to score on a throwing error by the Falcons (3-5).
- Montevallo would cut the score to 5-3 with two runs in the third and one in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI double from Darbi Duke.
- Crawford busted the game open in the fifth inning with a two-run single to score Buckley and Nieto as MC grabbed the 8-3 lead.
- The Falcons would get a run back in the fifth on a solo home run, but it was the game's final score.
- Junior
Kristen Gardner finished things off for MC in the circle, pitching two perfect innings to close the game for freshman
Marley Peagler (2-0), who went 5.0 innings, scattering 10 hits and four earned runs.
KEY STATS
- Four Lady Choctaws finished the night with two hits apiece, led by senior
Haley Thompson, Lee, Nieto and Mulligan.
- Buckley and Nieto each scored a team-high two runs, while Crawford led the way with three RBI.
- Holly LaForce, Kelsey Vining and Darbi Duke each had two hits for Montevallo.
- Abbey Pratt (1-2) took the loss for the Falcons, giving up 11 hits and eight earned runs over the complete game effort.
NEXT UP
- The Lady Choctaws will play twice in Montevallo on Saturday, facing #16 Indianapolis (11:15 am) and Miles (8:15 pm).
