CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team fell 77-69 to Southern University in New Orleans on Saturday, Nov. 25. The setback moves the Lady Choctaws to 2-2 on the season while SUNO improved to 3-4.
TURNING POINT
SUNO went on an 11-2 run over a four minute span to place the contest out of reach. MC held its last lead of the game at 63-62 with 6:37 left to play and grabbed just one additional basket during the Lady Knights' scoring run.
KEY STATS
Lauran Sheriff and
Zan Ratcliffe posted season-high efforts in the scoring column and rebounds. Sheriff led the team with 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds while Ratcliffe posted 14 points and secured six boards.
Ieisha Lacey tied a career-high with nine rebounds in the contest. The mark equaled her previous total set at Arkansas Tech.
Zariah Matthews and
Olivia Mabry each totaled 10 points to round out a quartet of double-digit scorers.
Mississippi College shot a season-high 31.6 percent from behind the arc in the setback.
Kascity Martin led SUNO with 20 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mississippi College opened the contest with the first six points of the contest and grabbed its largest lead of the game at 13-4 with 6:26 left to play in the opening quarter en route to leading 19-16 after the first period.
The Lady Knights grabbed their first lead of the game, 21-19, early in the second quarter on a 3-pointer from Shadejha Brown. The Blue and Gold maintained the lead through most of the period, including a 39-35 advantage at the intermission.
The Lady Choctaws held their own during the third quarter as they never trailed by more than four points despite outscoring SUNO 21-19 during the 10-minute period. MC held a slim one-point lead during the quarter behind back-to-back 3-pointers from Mabry and tied the contest at 56-all with 38 seconds left in the period on a jumper from
Kaitlyn Thompson, but Briana Upshur placed SUNO back in front 15 seconds later with a layup and a 58-56 lead through three quarters.
SUNO tried to expand its lead early in the final quarter, but the Lady Choctaws kept the contest within reach and held their last lead with 6:37 left to play on a jumper from Sheriff.
