Men’s Soccer Downed in Double Overtime by West Alabama, 2-1

LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 Gulf South Conference decision in double overtime to the Tigers of the University of West Alabama on Monday night. With the loss, the Choctaw's record now sits at 8-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 in GSC play.

TURNING POINT
- Jack Shiels headed in the golden goal for the Tigers in the 107th minute to seal the deal. Jean-Baptiste Meyniel helped set up the score.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team was able to get on the board in period number one, as both defenses held their own through the first 45 minutes of play.
- The Choctaws notched the game's first goal in the 62nd minute, when senior winger Jacob Farthing connected on a shot from inside the box to give MC the 1-0 advantage. The score marked for Farthing's fourth on the season.
- The Tigers would go on tie the match in the 78th minute, when Gaspard Voituriez-Donnelly connected for the equalizer.
- Neither team would be able to score a goal sending the match into overtime, where West Alabama would deliver the golden goal in OT period number two.
 
KEY STATS
- Both teams rattled off their fair share of shots on the night, with MC taking 17 and West Alabama taking 16. Both teams also accounted for nine shots on goal in the match.
- The Choctaws took three shots in the first period, 13 in period number two, and one in the first overtime period.
- Wanner Paiz led the Choctaws in shots taken on the night, matching a season-high with four shots taken and two on frame. Farthing and sophomore defender Connor Johnson also tallied two shots on goal in the contest.
- In goal, Humberto Pelaez tied a season-high with seven saves on the night. Pelaez saw his 2017 record fall to 8-2-2 with the loss.
- MC took nine corner kicks in the match, while West Alabama took four.
- The Choctaws were tagged for nine fouls, while the Tigers were whistled for 14.
- Five yellow cards were passed out in total on the evening, with MC receiving two and West Alabama receiving three.
 
MATCH NOTES
- Monday's match marked for the fourth overtime contest for MC on the year, including their second straight, and third over their last five contests.  
- The Choctaws have amassed a record of 1-1-2 in overtime contests in 2017.
 
UP NEXT
- The Choctaws will take an extended period of time off before returning to action on Sunday, Oct. 15 when in-state rival Delta State comes to Clinton. Kickoff for the match is slated for 3:00 p.m.
