Men’s Soccer Uses Late Goal to Down Delta State, 2-1

CLINTON, Miss. --- Sophomore Forward Dominic Snee scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute that propelled the Mississippi College men's soccer team past Delta State University 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Choctaws improve to 9-2-2 overall, and 6-2-1 in Gulf South Conference play.
 
TURNING POINT
- Snee's game-winning strike was assisted by freshman midfielder Abel Perez. Perez played the ball to Snee, who was able to sneak past the Statesman keeper in the box for the goal. The score marked for Snee's first goal as a Choctaw
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Choctaws got on the board first in the 21st minute, when Horacio Gutierrez Jr. and Jacob Farthing helped set up Victor Bazan for his fourth goal of the year.
- The Statesmen would tie the match up in the 45th minute, when Jordan Whitchurch delivered a throw-in that found the head of Ashley Walker, who set up Myron Duffy on a successful header for the score.
- Snee's eventual game-winning strike in the 79th minute would give way to the 2-1 final score.
 
KEY STATS
- Farthing's assist on the Bazan goal marked for his fifth of the season, a mark that leads the Choctaws and ranks second in the GSC.
- The Choctaws outshot the Statesmen 19-5 in the contest
- Six of the Choctaws 19 shots were on goal. MC took 11 shots in the first period, and eight in the second period.
- In goal, Humberto Pelaez recorded two saves on the day. The senior keeper improved his record to 9-2-2 on the season.
- MC took three corner kicks in the match, while holding Delta State to just one.
- The Choctaws were on the receiving end of 11 fouls, while the Statesmen were tagged for six.
 
MATCH NOTES
- With this afternoon's win, senior keeper Humberto Pelaez picked up his 31st career victory in goal, passing former MC keeper Andrew Dailey as the winningest goalkeeper in MC men's soccer history.
 
UP NEXT
- The Choctaws will return to action on Friday, Oct. 20 when they host the University of Montevallo in a GSC bout. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
