Men’s Soccer Clinches Postseason berth with 1-1 Draw against Montevallo

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team officially clinched a spot in the Gulf South Conference Postseason Tournament with their 1-1 draw against the Falcons of the University of Montevallo on Friday afternoon. With the draw, the Choctaws record now sits at 9-2-3 overall, and 6-2-2 in Gulf South Conference action.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Choctaws got on the board first late in the first period, when junior midfielder Wanner Paiz knocked in his first goal of the season in the 45th minute on a free kick from 40-plus yards out.
- Montevallo would go on to tie the match in the 52nd minute, when Cesare Marconi's free kick found the back of the net.
- Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard for the remainder of regulation, plus two ten-minute overtime periods; giving way to the final 1-1 score.
 
KEY STATS
- The Choctaws tallied a season-high 28 shots in the match, while tying a season-high with 12 shots on frame. MC took 11 shots in the first half, 13 in the second, one in overtime period number one and three in overtime period number two.
- MC took a season-high 15 corner kicks in the match, while holding to Montevallo to just two.
- MC also tallied a season-high 17 fouls in the contest, with Montevallo being responsible for nine.
- In Goal, Humberto Pelaez tallied five saves on the afternoon, while seeing his 2017 record come to 9-2-3 with the draw.
- Five yellow cards were passed out in total during the match, with MC being charged for two of them and Montevallo for three.
 
MATCH NOTES
- Friday's match marked for the Choctaws fifth overtime contest of the season, including their third double-overtime game in their last four dates.
- MC has compiled a record of 1-1-3 in those five overtime contests this season.
 
UP NEXT
- Due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday, The Choctaws will play their match against AUM originally scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 22 on Saturday, Oct. 21.
- Prior to the match on Saturday, MC will honor its 13 seniors as part of senior day festivities.
- Match time for Saturd is slated for 2:00 p.m.
