CLINTON, Miss. --- The #14 ranked Mississippi College women's soccer team wrapped up their 2017 regular season with a 4-0 victory over Delta State on Thursday, Oct. 26. With the win, the Lady Choctaws finish the 2017 regular season at 13-2-1 overall and 12-2 against Gulf South Conference opponents.
TURNING POINT
- Up 2-0 in the second half, junior forward
Lauren Smith found the back of the net off of a penalty kick in the 51
st minute. The goal, Smith's team-best seventh of the year, gave MC a 3-0 lead and enough momentum to cruise to the 4-0 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MC did not wait long to crack the scoreboard in the match. The Lady Choctaws broke the scoreless tie in the 4
th minute, when
Hannah Bailey delivered a corner kick that found the head of
Caitlin Hayes for the goal. The goal marked for Hayes's third of the year.
- The Lady Choctaws would go on to double their lead in the 12
th minute, when Bailey delivered another beautiful ball off of a corner kick that found the foot of Freshman
Lexi Ballon for the goal. The goal marked for Ballon's first career score as a Lady Choctaw.
- After taking a 3-0 lead in the second period off of Smith's successful penalty kick, MC would deliver the final blow via another penalty kick.
Samantha Carson scored MC's final goal of the match, her fourth of the year.
KEY STATS
- Bailey led all players with a season-high two assists on the afternoon.
- The Lady Choctaws tallied 21 shots on the afternoon, with eight on frame. MC took nine shots in the first period, and 12 in the second. Thursday's match marked for the fourth straight contest in which MC has taken at least 20 shots in a game.
- The Choctaw defense put together another solid outing, holding Delta State to just four shots and one shot on goal on the afternoon for their 10
th shutout of the season.
- In goal,
Andrea McDonald was a perfect 1-1 on save opportunities on the day, while improving her record to 9-2-1 on the year. McDonald played the first 65 minutes of the match in goal, and was then relived by Sophomore
Gabby Kayser for the final 25.
- MC took nine corner kicks in the match, while holding Delta State to two.
- The Lady Choctaws were tagged for 10 fouls, while the Lady Statesmen were on the receiving end of eight.
MATCH NOTES
- The win marks for MC's fourth straight, and their 9
th victory in their last 10 matches.
- With the win, MC clinches at least a share of the GSC Regular Season Title with Lee University.
UP NEXT
- The Choctaws will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 31 when they open up play in the opening round of the GSC Postseason Tournament at 12:00 p.m. in Clinton, Miss.
