Lady Choctaws Rally to top Montevallo, 2-1

CLINTON, Miss. --- A two-goal second half propelled the Mississippi College women's soccer team past the Falcons of the University of Montevallo 2-1 on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Lady Choctaws improve to 11-2-1 overall, and 10-2 in Gulf South Conference play.
 
TURNING POINT
- Freshman forward Liza Wise found the back of the net in the 87th off of a pass from junior defender Gaylynn Cooper to give MC the 2-1 lead.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Defense prevailed early for both teams, as neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in the first period.
- Montevallo broke the scoreless tie in the 48th minute of the match, when Taylor Gonzales lifted a lob shot from inside of the box that went just over the fingertips of MC keeper Andrea McDonald.
- MC would notch the equalizer in the 74th minute, when Lauren Smith knocked in her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Wise helped set up the goal.
- Wise's game-winnner with three minutes left to play would go on to seal the deal for MC. The goal served as her first score of the year.
 
KEY STATS
- Wise led the way offensively for MC, recording both a goal and an assist in the match.
- MC outshot Montevallo 20-7 in the match, with seven of those 20 shots coming on frame. MC took six shots in the first half, and 14 in the second.
- In Goal, Andrea McDonald improved her record to 8-2-1 on the year with the victory.
- MC took 10 corner kicks in the match, to Montevallo's three.
- The Choctaws were tagged for five fouls, while the Falcons were on the receiving end of 10.
- Montevallo collected the games lone yellow card.
 
UP NEXT
- Due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday, the Lady Choctaws match against AUM scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 22 has been moved up to Saturday, Oct. 21.
- Prior to the match, seniors Caitlin Hayes and Hannah Bailey will be recognized as part of Senior Day festivities.
