Choctaws Fall at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- The Mississippi College football team dropped a road game to Valdosta State University, 55-3, on Saturday night at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

The Choctaws fell to 0-7 on the season with an 0-5 record in the Gulf South Conference, while the Blazers improved to 2-3 with a 2-2 mark in league play.
 

TURNING POINT
- With 8:18 remaining in the second quarter, the Blazers held a 13-3 advantage and had just picked off an MC pass. Three plays later, a VSU pass headed towards the end zone appeared to be on its way into the hands of an MC defender but was deflected into the arms of Lio'undre Gallimore for a touchdown, extending the lead to 20-3.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blazers got on the board first with a touchdown, cashing in on a 10-play, 81-yard drive that finished with a 29-yard scoring run by quarterback Rogan Wells on 3rd and 8.
- MC would answer on their next possession, holding onto the ball for 7:25 and going 73 yards on 17 plays for a 19-yard field goal by junior Greg Nickles.
- Valdosta would score another touchdown on their next possession and would not look back on their way to a big victory in the GSC-TV/ESPN3 Game of the Week.
 

KEY STATS
- Senior Reggie Bennett led the Choctaws with seven tackles, including six solo stops on the night.
- Junior Colton Magee had four tackles and a tackle for loss, while seniors Chris Manning and Jahmaad Harrell each had six tackles.
- The Choctaws rushed for 136 yards in the game, led by 64 from junior Tiberias Lampkin.
- Junior Alizee Chubbs added 41 rushing yards, while junior Ja'Moz Mark caught two passes for a team-high 35 yards.
- Wells led the VSU offense with 158 passing yards and three touchdowns, also rushing for 30 yards and a score.
- The Blazers boasted a balanced offense with 245 rushing yards and 239 passing yards.
- Malik Slater led the defense with nine tackles in the contest.
 

GAME NOTES
- This was the 18th all-time meeting between the two schools and Valdosta State now holds the series lead, 9-8-1.
- This was the second game the Choctaws have played in the State of Georgia this season, falling to Clark Atlanta in overtime in the season opener.
 

NEXT UP
- The Choctaws will come back to Clinton for "Homecoming" next Saturday, hosting West Georgia at 3:00 p.m. at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
