Volleyball Preview: Alcorn State Tri-Match; South Region Crossover

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team has a busy week with five non-conference matches in four days. The active week opens with a tri-match in Lorman, Miss., against Tougaloo and Alcorn State. The backend of the slate features contests against Sunshine State Conference foes Flagler College, Nova Southeastern and Embry-Riddle.

MC opens with Tougaloo at 4 p.m. on Wedesday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. outing at Alcorn State. The slate at the Crossover opens with a 2:30 p.m. match against Flagler College on Friday, Oct. 13. The Lady Choctaws close out the Crossover with a pair of matches on Saturday, Oct. 14 beginning at 10 a.m. agaisnt Nova Southeastern and a 4:45 match against Embry-Riddle.

FIRST SERVES
•    The meetings with Tougaloo and Alcorn State are the first since 2015. MC fell 3-1 to Alcorn State in A.E. Wood Coliseum on Sept. 3 and followed with a five-set setback to Tougaloo. The Lady Choctaws lead the series record against both squads. The Navy and Gold are 4-2 al-time vs. Tougaloo and holds a 3-1 mark against the Lady Braves.

•    Mississippi College and Embry-Riddle set to meet for the third time in program history on Saturday, Oct. 14. ERA has claimed the previous two meetings between the two schools. MC meets Flagler and Nova Southeastern for the first time in program history this weekend in Hoover, Ala.

•    Interim head coach Holly Tupper grabbed her first, collegiate coaching win on Saturday in four sets against Montevallo. The Lady Choctaws claimed the first set against UM, 25-21, and claimed 25-21 and 25-20 victories in the final two sets to secure the win. The Falcons claimed the second set 25-23.

•    Senior Kayana Mitchell leads the Lady Choctaws this season with 140 kills and has totaled a team-best 55 total blocks. The Southaven, Miss., native ranks fifth in the Gulf South Conference with 0.89 blocks per set.

•    Mitchell continues to chase Katie Rowland for the top spot in Mississippi College history in block assists and total blocks. Mitchell has 220 block assists in her career and 271 total blocks. Rowland holds the record with 235 block assists and 335 total blocks. Mitchell sits two kills shy of cracking the top five in career kills with 625 in her four seasons.

•    Junior Jill Brown ranks 10th in the GSC in digs per set with 3.36. The Elkhart, Ind., product sits second on the team in digs with 148, which is three from tops on the squad held by Madison Kimes.

•    Sydney Chandler is 26 assists from moving to second in program history. The Silverhill, Ala., native leads the squad this season with 329. 

•    Tougaloo is riding a three-game win streak entering the midweek slate with wins over Mississippi University for Women, Rust College and Talladega College while Alcorn State has dropped 14 straight matches.

•    Nova Southeastern is 4-8 and 2-6 in the Sunshine State Conference while Embry-Riddle is 4-7 and 2-6 in the SSC. Flagler stands 11-3 on the season.
