Volleyball Preview: Belhaven Classic

CLINTON, Miss. --- Following a shutout win on Tuesday evening, the Mississippi College volleyball team returns to action this weekend with a busy schedule as the Lady Choctaws (2-1) take part in the Belhaven Classic. MC opens the four-game slate on Friday, Sept. 9 at A.E. Wood Coliseum against Williams Baptist at 3 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. contest against Lyon College.

Following the Friday action, MC travels to Jackson, Miss., for the second day of the Classic when it faces Centenary College (La.) at 5 p.m. and the host Blazers to close out the day at 7 p.m.

Mississippi College faces Lyon College for the sixth time in the series as the Scots hold a 3-2 advantage over the Navy and Gold, including the last three meetings. The two squads last faced off on Sept. 17, 2006. The meeting with Williams Baptist marks the first in the series. The Lady Choctaws are 10-23 all-time against BU and riding a three-game win streak against Centenary to extend its lead in the series to 3-1.

"I think this weekend will be good for us. We are coming off of two wins, yet we know there is still work to be done. We know we can never underestimate any team and we have to take care of business on our side of the court," said head coach Julie Redus. "We have been working this week to fix our controllable errors and building consistency in our play. We expect to have good hard fought matches throughout the weekend and we will hopefully come out with more wins than losses."

The Lady Choctaws blanked Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday evening to claim its first win in program history against the Division I, in-state foe. For the second straight outing, Jenna Campbell led MC with a double-digit kill performance with 10 kills while Bailee Berringer dished out a team and season-best 18 assists. Madison Kimes directed the back line with 13 digs as Kayana Mitchell compiled seven blocks - a season-best and one shy of tying her career-best.

Campbell leads the team with 27 kills while Berringer and Sydney Chandler are tied for tops on the team with 38 assists. Kimes has tallied 41 digs while Mitchell helps guide the defensive effort with 11 blocks.

Williams Baptist enters the weekend 0-4 after falling to Ouachita Baptist, 3-0, on Tuesday evening. Madison Laubach paces the Eagles with 30 kills while Jessica Baugh has a team-best 55 digs alongside Audra Nailing's 10 total blocks on the defensive side.

Lyon College stands at 5-1 on the season following Wednesday evening's 3-0 loss at Arkansas-Monticello. The Scots are led by Katarina Frickleton with 36 kills and nine total blocks.

Centenary, which enters 1-4 on the season, is paced by Desiree Frey' 47 kills while Marissa Sandoval's 61 digs and Ashley Brown's nine blocks guide the defensive effort.
