Lady Choctaws Drop Season Opener to Embry-Riddle

SAINT LEO, Fla. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team fell in their first regular season contest of the year to the Eagles of Embry-Riddle University 2-0 on Saturday in a neutral-site match.
 
Defense prevailed early for both teams, as they went into halftime tied at zero a piece. Embry-Riddle broke the tie in the 55th minute when Andrea Froshaug capitalized off of a Victoria Gustafsson pass and found the back of the net, as a result of the ball deflecting off of an MC defender. The Lady Choctaws came their closest to scoring in the 82nd minute, when a shot from Lauren Smith hit off of the crossbar. Froshaug sealed the deal for the Eagles in the 89th minute by knocking in her second goal of the game.
 
Embry-Riddle outshot the Lady Choctaws 11-8 in the contest, with nine of those 11 shots coming in the second half. The Eagles finished with six shots on goal in the game. The Lady Choctaws took three shots in the first half, and five in the second half with only one shot on goal for the match.
 
Junior Defender Caitlin Hayes took a team-high three shots on the night for the Lady Choctaws. Freshman Jordan Dillon finished with two shots and recorded the lone shot on goal. Katie Taylor, Kyra Montes and Lauren Smith all accounted for a shot taken on the evening.
 
In Goal, Andrea McDonald recorded four saves on six attempts for the Lady Choctaws. The sophomore from New Orleans, La. played in all 90 minutes.
 
MC took four corner kicks on the night, to Embry-Riddle's three. A total of 12 fouls were committed, with seven coming from Embry-Riddle and five from MC.
 
The Lady Choctaws take will take to the pitch again on Monday, Sept. 5, when they face-off against Saint Leo University. Kickoff is slated for 10:00 a.m. CST. A video broadcast will be available for viewing on Saint Leo's athletic website.
