Caitlin Hayes headed in a corner kick from freshman
Lauren Kate Carter in overtime to propel the Mississippi College women's soccer team over Saint Leo University 3-2 on Monday. The win brings the Lady Choctaws record to 1-1 on the season.
"It was a great team effort," Head Coach
Darryl Longabaugh said of his ladies performance. "We didn't give in or quit, and we found a way to win. I am very proud of the ladies."
Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the first half, as both team's defenses held steady. Saint Leo got in the scoring column first, when Arielle Kabangu knocked in a goal assisted by Genevieve Gignac in the 48
th minute. The Lady Choctaws evened things up when sophomore
Jess Davenport scored her first goal of the season in the 64
th minute.
Caitlin Hayes contributed for the assist. Davenport doubled her season goal total only a few minutes later, when
Lauren Kate Carter helped set up Davenport's score in the 70
th minute. The Lions tied things back up in the 85
th minute, when Katie Waddell capitalized on a PK opportunity. A 2-2 score at the end of regulation sent the game into overtime, where
Caitlin Hayes's 98
th minute golden goal brought the contest to an end.

Caitlin Hayes had the game winning-goal and one assist on the night.
Lauren Kate Carter facilitated two total assists.
Katie Taylor put up three shots on goal, and senior
Meghan Mauzy accounted for one shot on goal.
In Goal,
Andrea McDonald recorded three saves on five attempts. Two of those three came in the first half.
The Lions outshot the Lady Choctaws 16-7 on the afternoon. MC, however, tallied seven shots on goal to Saint Leo's five. Every shot taken by MC was on goal.
Saint Leo took nine corner kicks in the contest, to MC's three. The Lions committed six offside infractions, while the Lady Choctaws committed only two.
The Lady Choctaws return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when they go back on the road to face the University of Tampa in Florence, Ala. in a neutral-site contest. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
