Gutierrez's Game-Winner Guides Choctaws to 2-1 win over Spring Hill in OT

CLINTON, Miss --- Junior midfielder Horacio Gutierrez Jr. knocked in the game winning-goal in the early minutes of overtime to give men's soccer a 2-1 victory over Spring Hill College on Sunday.

The win for MC brings their record to 5-1-1 on the year, and 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play. It is the fourth straight win for the Choctaws, and the second straight victory that has come in the waning minutes of overtime.

Gutierrez and Jacob Farthing were responsible for the Choctaws two goals on the night, while Dinho Zwane recorded the lone assist for MC.

The Choctaws outshot the Badgers 17 to 6 in the contest. MC put up six shots on goal, to Spring Hill's three. The Choctaws took nine shots in the first half, five in the second and three in overtime.

Farthing got MC on the board in the 35th minute of the match, when the junior transfer took a pass from Zwane and connected for his fourth goal of the year; a goal total that finds him second to only senior Jorge Delgado (9).  Tilman Schober scored the equalizer for Spring Hill in the 37th minute, when he capitalized on a ball that deflected off of keeper Humberto Pelaez.  The 1-1 score held steady to the end of the first half.

Neither team was able to score a goal in the second half, as the defenses held steady. The Choctaws saw several scoring opportunities, but could not capitalize. Both Connor Johnson and Delgado put up shots on goal in the half.

The scoreless second half took the game into overtime, where Gutierrez sealed the deal for the Choctaws when he found the back of the net after a shot from Johnson hit off of the crossbar, then deflected off of a Spring Hill defender to find his foot (92:48).

Delgado's four shots on the evening lead all Choctaws. Gutierrez and Johnson both accounted for three shots, with two of Gutierrez's and one of Johnson's being on frame. Javier Avelar took two shots in the contest for MC. Farthing and Zwane both put up a shot on goal, with Dominic Snee, George Fradenburg and Sergio Garcia all taking shots as well.

In goal, Pelaez recorded two saves on three opportunities. The junior keeper improved his record to 4-1-1 on the season.

MC took four conrer kicks, to Spring Hill's three. The Choctaws were tagged for two offside infractions, to the Badgers four. Six yellow cards were passed out in total on the evening, with both teams receiving three apiece.

Inclement weather and lighting conditions forced the game back from a scheduled start of 4:00 p.m., to a 6:00 p.m. start at Arrow Field on the campus of Clinton High School; enabling team captain Graham Bobo to take to the pitch at his alma mater.

Up next for the Choctaws, they will travel to Livingston, Ala. to face off against the University of West Alabama on Friday in a GSC matchup. Match time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
