CLINTON, Miss. --- Senior midfielder
Jorge Delgado headed in the game-winning golden goal in overtime to record his second hat trick of the season, and lift the Mississippi College men's soccer team over the Argonauts of the University of West Florida on Friday afternoon.
The dramatic overtime victory improves the Choctaws record t0 4-1-1 on the year, and 2-0 in GSC Play.
Delgado's three-goal performance led the Choctaws on offense, with
Ben Roberts accounting for the other MC goal. Delgado boosted his season goal total to nine, which leads all players in the GSC.
Jacob Farthing,
Dinho Zwane and
George Fradenburg all recorded assists on the afternoon.
The Choctaws outshot the Argonauts 14-13 in the match. MC put up seven shots on goal, to UWF's five. The Choctaws took seven shots in the first half, six in the second and one in overtime.
In Goal,
Humberto Pelaez converted two saves on five attempts. The junior goalkeeper improved his overall record to 3-1-1.
Delgado got things going offensively for MC, when he scored his first goal of the day in the 9
th minute. Farthing helped set up the score. The 1-0 score would hold steady all the way to halftime.
Joshua Sauer scored the equalizer for UWF in the 59
th minute, when he took advantage of a stolen pass and found the back of the net. Chandler Castleman put the Argonauts up 2-1 in the 74
th minute, with the help from Kameron Bethell. Delgado headed in the equalizer, his second of the match, in 80
th minute. Zwane helped initiate the score.
UWF took the lead in the 89
th minute, when Marteinn Urbancic helped set up a Shawn Sanon score. The equalizer came from MC in dramatic fashion only seconds later. Trailing with six seconds left in regulation, Roberts fired a shot from the far center that found the top right corner of the net; sending the game into overtime. Delgado's game-winner came in the 95
th minute, when Fradenburg helped set up the score on a perfectly-placed ball.
Delgado's six shots and four shots on goal both were a team high for the contest. Roberts and
Horacio Gutierrez Jr. both took two shots, with Roberts accounting for a shot on goal. Zwane, Farthing, Fradenburg and
Eduardo Juarez all also took shots in the contest; with Juarez's and Fradenburg's being on frame.
MC took three corner kicks, to UWF's five. Both teams were tagged for only one offside infraction apiece. The Argonauts were cited for three yellow cards on the afternoon.
The Choctaws will return to action on Sunday, when they host another GSC opponent in Spring Hill. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
