FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team opened up the 2016 season Friday evening by defeating the Sharks of Nova Southeastern University 2-0 at the NSU Soccer Complex.
"We fought hard, it was without a doubt a hard-fought win," Head Coach Kevin Johns said. "I am excited for the team and the guys after tonight's big win. It will definitely help us to keep moving forward and progressing as a team."
The Choctaws got on the scoreboard early in the contest, as it took only five minutes for junior transfer Jacob Farthing to fire his first career goal as a Choctaw into the back of the net; giving the Choctaws a lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Marco Profumo also chipped in for his first career goal at MC. The junior transfer booted in a goal in the 67th minute that gave the Choctaws a 2-0 lead that would hold steady for the match's duration.
In goal, Humberto Pelaez was perfect for the Choctaws, going five for five on save opportunities. The junior goalkeeper's performance earned him both his first win and shutout of the season.
Nova Southeastern outshot the Choctaws, 15-6. Four of MC's six total shots were on goal, while Nova Southeastern accounted for five shots on goal. The Sharks took seven corner kicks, and the Choctaws took just two. Seventeen fouls were committed in total for the contest, with 11 coming from Nova Southeastern and six from MC.
