Lady Choctaws Roll to 11-0 Win Over Southern Wesleyan at NCCAA World Series

TROUTVILLE, Va. --- The Mississippi College softball team scored early and often in an 11-0 win over Southern Wesleyan on the opening day of the NCCAA World Series, held at the Botetourt Sports Complex.

The Lady Choctaws (36-19) scored 25 runs over their two wins on Wednesday, taking down Oakland City 14-4 in the opening game of the tournament.

Junior Tylan Buckley was the offensive star of the game, going 2-for-3 with a home run and six RBI, giving her eight runs batted in on the first day of the tournament. Her three-run home run in the third inning pushed the lead out to 4-0, giving her 13 long balls on the season, a new MC single-season record.

Buckley got the scoring going in the first inning with a two-run single, and MC took a 2-0 lead after a frame.

Senior Carlie Sargent (19-11) would not need any more support as the lefty gave up just four hits over her eighth shutout of the season. She struck out nine in the game, extending her single-season MC record with 189 in 2016.

Junior Megan Everett, who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, doubled to lead off the third inning and came home to score on a double by freshman Alexia Harmon, her team-high 13th of the season. Harmon came home to score on a groundout by Buckley and MC led 4-0 after three innings.

After Buckley's three-run homer in the fifth, the Lady Choctaws would tack on four more runs in the sixth as Everett's RBI single scored two runs, and sophomore Mikayla Carruth came off the bench to hit a two-run triple and give the game its final score.

Sophomore Katherine Lee and junior Lauren Mulligan joined Buckley and Everett with multiple-hit games, while Lee, Everett and Harmon each scored two runs.

Lizzie Fela led SWU with two hits in the game. Hunter Hoskins (12-10) took the loss for the Warriors (22-30), giving up eight hits and seven earned runs over 4.1 innings.

MC will close out pool play on Thursday when they will face Emmanuel College at 9:00 am (CT). With a win, MC will claim the "Pool A" title and play in the semi-finals at 3:00 pm (CT). With a loss, they will have to wait to see if they move on to the semi-finals.
