TROUTVILLE, Va. --- The Mississippi College softball team scored seven 7th-inning runs to pull away for a 14-4 victory over Oakland City University in the opening game of the 2016 NCCAA World Series on Wednesday afternoon, held at the Botetourt Sports Complex.
After both teams were scoreless through three innings, the Lady Choctaws (35-19) got things going in the fourth inning when junior
Tylan Buckley singled home junior
Megan Everett and freshman
Alexia Harmon to take a 2-0 lead.
Freshman
Cheyenne Mathews drove Buckley in with a single, while senior
Madison Oliver hit a double off the base of the wall in center field to score pinch-runner
Haley Thompson, giving MC a 4-0 lead going to the bottom of the fourth.
The Mighty Oaks (15-20) would answer back with a couple runs in the fourth and cut the score to 4-3 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but a sliding catch by Everett ended the fifth inning and MC kept the lead.
Freshman
Kristen Qualls led off the sixth inning with her 12th home run of the season, a deep drive over the left-center field fence that pushed the lead back out to 5-3.
MC would add two more runs in the sixth as freshman
Makenzie Nieto doubled home freshman
Haley Muller to give MC a 7-3 advantage going to the bottom of the sixth.
The Lady Choctaws broke the game open in the seventh with seven runs, six of which were unearned. Mathews, senior
Kimmie Conley and
Megan Everett each had RBI singles, while junior
Lauren Mulligan had an RBI double in the big inning.
MC posted 15 hits in the game with six players having two base-knocks. Buckley and Mathews led the way with two RBI apiece.
Freshman
Penny Nichols (15-7) tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Whitney Jeffers (7-10) took the loss for OCU, giving up eight hits and six earned runs.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they face Southern Wesleyan (21-29) at 3:30 pm (CT).
